"Below average Inside, Above Average Outside"

6.0

Beautiful view from the pool and patio. If you have low requirements for noise and cleanliness this is a good budget conscious option for south Kona. We stayed for 2 nights in Mahini room on the ground floor. Every step taken above us could be heard and when someone opened a sliding door above, it sounded as if our entry door was opening. Draperies covering our entry door and windows facing the pool area were dirty as was the old A/C unit. Large bugs observed on the patio in the evening and thrashed one that somehow found its way onto the TV in our room. Do not expect to stream video or programming on the room TV as modem speeds are very slow. Bed and bedding were adequate. Bathroom was spartan, bath tile needed cleaning and bath vanity was tired looking. The water pressure in the shower was very good and the highlight of the bathroom.

"Good"

6.0

First off, the positives: The view from our room was absolutely astonishingly beautiful! The bed was really comfortable as well. The staff were all friendly and helpful. However, the place was not clean, as there was hair in one of the drawers and we had to run to Safeway to purchase sanitizer wipes for high touch surfaces, as they were dirty, and bleach spray to spray down the shower area. The refrigerator was dirty also. Each night there were giant Palmetto bugs crawling around outside. Unfortunately, they like to swim also, as the pool had several of them floating in it for all but two nights that we were there (out of eight). If the place were cleaner, had better pool care, and a clothes dryer, it would be a five star rating. But that view is amazing!

"Low Key Luxury with a killer view"

10.0

My wife and I stayed four days in the Mauana Room here and loved it. It wasn't fancy -- more like a European guest house or small hotel than any kind of American resort. But it was just lovely. We woke up every morning and looked out onto the ocean a mile down the hill, watched the cardinals and yellow finches zip across the lawn, and chatted now and again with amiable other guests. Also, the Luana is just a couple of miles from many wonderful sites -- Two Step beach for snorkeling, the Refuge, and the Painted Church. If you like to be far from the crowds, in a quiet, beautiful place, you'll like the Luana Inn.

"Lovely place! Private and like home!"

10.0

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for a full week and loved it! Our room was right next to the pool with a beautiful view. The place is quiet, and not many guests so it feels private as well. We felt right at home at Luana Inn and even had a direct line with the caretaker for any questions or concerns. The location is out of the touristy area, in a more rural place near some really amazing snorkeling spots like 2 step, where we saw a group of wild dolphins in the cove! We had free parking that was essential. There are some restaurants and shops nearby and it's a lovely drive through windy, beautiful island roads. As soon as we left I felt like this was home away from home and I can't wait to go back. We stayed in the Mahina room which was very comfortable and had everything we needed like a sink, microwave and coffee/tea setup. There is a powerful air conditioner inside and nice blackout curtains if you like it dark to sleep. The hot tub is always running and is so wonderful to sit in and watch the stars. The flowers and trees on the property are gorgeous, so no matter if you stay there all day to relax or go on adventures nearby, the Luana Inn is far superior to any hotel chain. It's home!

"Cozy retreat away from the crowds with great views of Kealakekua Bay"

10.0

We enjoyed our stay in the Moana Room at this inn. Comfortable, spacious room with a semi-private lawn and great views of the ocean. Nice and quiet - you wake up to all the songbirds. The swimming pool was just steps away, and excellent snorkeling at Two Step/Honaunau Bay (barely 10 minutes away). Our host, Chinmayo, was very hospitable and we enjoyed trading notes with her at the end of each day. The inn is about 15-20 minutes away from the bustling Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona and we preferred it that way. But this also meant that the nearest restaurants and cafes are about 10-15 minutes away. We'd usually pick up our breakfast and dinner at one of the restaurants in Kealakekua/Captain Cook, and eat on the lawn while watching the sunset. They've got a good collection of books and DVDs to enjoy if you find yourself with a lot of free time.
