"Couldn't pay us to stay there"

2.0

We received a free 2-night stay at this place. We checked in, went to the room, took one look, turned around, handed them their keys back & left. Disgustingly filthy! So they literally tried to pay us to stay there and we wouldn't! If I was college age and came here with my friends and drank heavily, I don't think I could even pass out in that room!

"Very basic and probably unsafe"

4.0

Our room was very basic i question the cleanliness of the hotel. The towels were tread bare we were there for a weekend and our room was never cleaned, nor the towels replaced. If you want TV access, there is a fee for that. When i asked for an extra towel i had to pay a fee which was returned after the towel was returned. The beach is about a 10 minute walk across a highway, and the front desk staff do not speak English. Jorge the bell man is excellent. He is very helpful and the only redeeming quality i found. We booked online but they didn't have our reservation when we arrived so we had to pay again because it was late at night and our options were limited. There are many young men staying there and although they stared they never approached us. They were quite loud at night.

"A great stay. Seriously."

8.0

My husband and I just returned from 7 days/6 nights in beautiful Puerto Vallarta. I had gone once before about 5 years ago, and stayed at Suites Del Sol then, and I had such a lovely time, we decided to give it another go. My husband wasn't too impressed with the looks of the place when we pulled up in the cab, but I assured him he wouldn't be sorry. The lobby is really neat, a very authentic Mexican hotel. The bellman was wonderful. We were checked in with no problems -- we booked through Vallarta.com and got the most basic room for about $30 USD a night. The fantastic thing was we got upgraded. The many of the rooms were being repainted, so they moved us to a large suite at the end of the corridor. The corridor is open air and has bottles of purified water for you to fill up water jugs. Oh and we were never bothered once by the workers, neither by noise or given any problems. Everyone was nice and said Hola to us :) Oh and our room had two balconies and ceiling fans in both rooms and an AC in the bedroom. The temperature was great. We kept the balcony doors open all night, even with us being on the street side. I didn't find it too loud at all, actually kind of nice to have a totally different experience from sleeping at home! The pool was small but perfect for us, lots of shade and sun, plenty of lounge chairs and tables. If you prefer the beach, go across the street and access the beach via the Villa Vallartas complex. If you head back by the tennis club, you can access the beach from there. There are no restaurants or bars by this side. There is a roped off area for people who live at the condos, but otherwise you can take your beach towels down and chill out. There aren't many vendors down this way too. Pick up some sandwiches at one of the great cafes in the Villa complex and some cervesas from the OXXO (ubiquitous convenience store). If you want a livlier beach, head down to the old town. There are plenty of bars/restaurants that are on the beach and are good prices. The best ones are further down the Malecon, pretty much on the far side. It takes maybe 10-15 minutes by bus - at the most. Worth the ride and I bet you will strike up a fun conversation on the bus. The restaurant inside the hotel has a great breakfast, we didn't try their dinner. Two awesome restaurants flank the hotel on both sides, taquerias where we got terrific meals for under $15 for both of us WITH beer. Can't beat that!! Also, the restaurant is no longer located by the pool. It is on the street. You can get beers for the pool for about $1 each, or you can go to the Mega Supermercado (5 min walk towards town) or the OXXO (less than 1 minute towards town). The restaurant is now open until about 10pm. We even got room service from the one night and was under $10 USD. The hotel is catty-corner to the bus stop that takes people downtown to the Centro. It is a lot easier to cross the street than people here are letting on. There are a few islands across the several lane road, just cross each island as you can and wait. It is best to follow someone the first or second times so you can get the hang of it. Seriously though, I think it is harder to cross the street in Philadelphia. Plus the drivers WILL slow down for you, esp if you are a woman. The buses are about 50 cents/person each way, the buses are older and the shocks are pretty much shot on all the buses, but seriously, what do you expect for 50 cents. The buses come every 2 minutes or so, they are clean, and they are efficient. I honestly do not think you need a rental car if you stay at the Suites. I mean, unless you plan on taking a lot of side excursions, but even then it might be cheaper to get a cab. You can get cabs to quieter beaches and outlaying towns for under 200 pesos ($16 USD). The cab drivers let you practice your Spanish, offer great advice, and were almost always happy to talk with us. The only problems we had with the hotel were as follows: we "lost" a pool towel - honestly, I am pretty sure I checked out two, returned one after the pool one day, and tried to return the other the next day. I should have made sure that we got the receipt re-done to say we only had one out when we returned the other, but I didn't. We ended up having to pay 300 pesos, which sucked, but whatever. The receptionist was really freaking pissed at me which I find odd. It's just a towel and I paid for it. And yes, the rooms aren't in top shape. The mattresses were pretty uncomfortable, but I was used to it by the 3rd day. Some stretches when I got up took care of it. The rooms were not in top shape for sure, but this is Mexico. They were CLEAN which is what matters the most to me. If you want something fancier, pay the money for one of those all inclusives, even though I have read enough reviews about them to know they aren't always perfect. If you want a real experience where you meet people, get a great deal, enjoy the true Mexico, then stay at Suites Del Sol. Check out the surrounding stores and restaurants. Don't be afraid of the bus or eating at a place with a Spanish menu. Don't hit up Senor Frogs and those other traps on the Malecon. Go to Cancun for that. Enjoy the charm of PV. :)

"Beware of "don't have your reservation" scam."

2.0

I booked through expedia, but they said they had no reservation. I had to pay again to get a terrible room. The next day I was in the lobby phoning expedia and two more couples came in...and their reservations were lost also. More funny business at front desk while I phoned expedia again. Expedia told me they phoned front desk and explained my reservation and they hung up on expedia.

"Good lokking hotel, far from downtown! not so cool beach near by!"

4.0

I stayed at this hotel form Dec 26, 2010 to Jan 2,2011. And when I booked the hotel they told us that it was located close to beach and it is but not a good beach, they also told us that is very close to downtown (malecon) but is NOT, is like 30 min walk from the hotel to the beginning of the malecon which was too far for me. At the end we end up getting a car rental that it worked perfectly for us, because we end up going to some nice beaches (close distance by car) and had a lot of fun. There were two good restaurants near by OCHO TOSTADAS (two blocks from the hotel) and you can get directions on the lobby of the hotel and one TACO stand located outside the hotel which was delicious its called “EL TIZOK”. Other than that you have to go to the malecon or downtown area to get the good stuff.I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL ONLY OF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A RENTAL CAR. Other than that stay close to downtown. Another think I didn’t like was the attitude of the front desk people both ladies from both shifts, you will now what I am talking about as soon as you get to the hotel on the other side, the bellman its one of the nicest person I ever meet. Hope my review is useful

"very good quality for the price!!"

8.0

We had a very great deal for fly ticket so we tried to find a cheap hotel in Puerto Vallarta (during Easter Holidays!) . So we stay at Suites del Sol and we was so surprised ! The hotel is clean, the rooms are big (like suites) and it's well located. Juste 1 block to the beach and near dowtown. You can do everything at footwalk but if you want to go downtown faster, there's the public bus for 1$ who stop just in the front of the hotel. The staff are friendly and a lot of them speak english. The pool is not big, but very clean! We didn't eat at the restaurant of the hotel, but there's a lot of cheap place to eat in town (so good.....i love Mexican food). And it's near a supermarket. The only bad thing it's the noise because there's a lot of circulation on the boulevard in the front of the hotel. So for the price, it was higher that we expected!

"Awesome Hotel, Clean and Friendly."

10.0

Stayed in Hotel Suites Del Sol for 2 nights in March 2010. Definitely enjoyed the stay and would go there again if we got the same deal. During our visit, a room for 2 persons was at the promotion rate of 489 pesos (including taxes). You will not find such quality/price ratio anywhere else around I believe. It is considered a 4 stars hotel but is probably more like 3 stars with the aging. I'm not sure I would choose this hotel at the regular fee of 900 pesos for a room though. I guess we were lucky with the promotion rate. Our room on 3rd floor was clean. Air conditioning was working fine and not noisy. Mini balcony to hang clothes to dry. The pool is great and the lobby has a nice style (museum-like furnitures all around). The style of the floors with separation and plants is wonderful. I believe there is WIFI in the lobby as we have seen several people with laptops there. Staff was helpful and nice and even kept our luggages for few hours after our checkout so we could go around town before going back to airport. Since the hotel is located close to road (and intersection), you will most likely hear trucks /cars once in a while. It did not ruin the stay for us. It is located about 10 minutes by bus from downtown. Bus pass right in front of the hotel every 2 minutes. Around the hotel you will find a few restaurants, pharmacy, stores, etc. It didn't really bother us to be away from downtown as the buses are very frequent and couldn't be more simple to get around.

"Beware of the noise and location"

2.0

I read this was a four star hotel but I would give it only two stars. I booked seven nights from Dec 27 to Jan 03 because I wanted to spend New Years in Vallarta, having been there three times before. The Lobby is very nice with interesting decor. The first sign of trouble was when I checked in the receptionist seemed to have trouble finding my reservation or something else she quietly spoke to someone in the office, then told me my room was being cleaned. i waited about 15 minutes. Then the bellman took me to my room which was on the fourth floor. It was in need of some remodeling. This is an old hotel and my room had old chiped furniture a hard mattress and balcony doors that did not close completely allowing noise from the six lane street to enter my room. It smelled like mold. The location is much to be desired of, it is located about a good twenty minute walk from the boardwalk (malecon) no good restaurants nearby, and dangerous streets to cross. The previous three hotels I have stayed at were better than this one and in better locations. One of he receptionists seemed helpfull the other one not very friendly or willing to help when I resquested a quieter room. I will never stay at this hotel aqain and would not recommend it to anyone I know. The view of my first room was of what looked like a dump accross the street see pic. Also the elevators were very small and after looking at how the hotel needed maintenance I was afraid to use the elevators thinking that they were also in need of maintenance so I would walke up and down four flights of stairs.

"Quiet, eclectic and well-located"

8.0

We spent a week at the Hotel Suites del Sol, a few minutes (by car or city bus) north of the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta. The hotel doesn't look like much from the outside, sitting on the corner of a busy intersection. Inside, however, it is very nice. The lobby and bar/restaurant is an eclectic collection of Mexican memorabilia - a museum of old typewriters, an old motorcycle, a horse buggy, and endless knick-knacks of varying vintage. The lobby and restaurant is open to a good-sized pool (round) and a smaller jacuzzi/wading pool attached. All surrounded by ample vegetation. The hotel rooms are large for their description (we had a standard - 2 double beds, a table and chairs, a small balcony and a decent bathroom). The hallways on each of the 4 upper floors are open-air and spacious. The hotel is well-located - a few minutes by city-bus (simple, frequent) or taxi ($8 US), or a 25-min walk from the city centre and Malecon. Across the boulevard is a a complex of cafes and stores, with several other restaurant and convenience store options along the boulevard. On the other side of the complex is the beach (access between 2 resorts). About 10 minutes from the airport. The hotel is not a luxury hotel, but all in all, an excellent value for the price. The restaurant/bar closes most days at 3 pm - which means that you can't get a later drink by the pool, but that you can bring your own.
