"Manor House disaster"

2.0

All round bad experience, I was doing a road trip around Scotland and at 8pm when I was at John O'Groats I had a call from The Manor house to tell me my room had flooded and they would put me in another room in a building down the street. The room they put me in was terrible, it was tiny had no on suite, no tea/coffee etc a hole in the wall that looked like a punch hole and defective lock on door, the shared toilet bathroom was filthy. They offered breakfast and a burger?chips as compensation. I sat in the room for 10 mins and decided it was not fit to stay the night. I phoned the Manager and was told they had suddenly got a room available so I went back and was given a room on the 2nd floor that at least had comfortable beds and on suite bathroom toilet. I agreed to stay in that room and after 90mins of stress got a reasonable nights sleep. In the morning when I woke up I noticed even this room was sub standard with stains on the ceiling and flaking plaster on walls and around windows. I went down for breakfast and asked to see the manager, I was very interested to see the supposed flooded room and I want some explanation for all the problems the night before. Reception told me the manager was making breakfast and would speak to me after I had my breakfast. After I finished breakfast I went back to reception and was told the manager had suddenly had to go to Inverness and had taken the key to the flodded room with him. I truly believe they owe me a full refund.

This hotel has a lot of beautiful history wrapped through it. It is charming, as are the people who manage it. It is in the middle of renovations, and once those are completed, I'm sure it will be lovely! I feasted on lamb curry one night there, and it was very delicious! I even recommended it to the bus driver who dropped me off there the following night. I would eat that lamb curry any night!

"Family run"

10.0

Really friendly family run hotel. We had dinner in the restaurant, which was excellent. The hotel is being renovated on the outside but doesn't detract from the inside. Thoroughly recommend this hotel. There is a lovely walk around the river right outside the hotel.

"Very Good."

8.0

Very good. I have been visiting Thurso for a number of years, but this was my first time staying at the Manor House Hotel. I stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed coming back to the hotel after a days surfing. Very friendly staff and great food. Will be back.

"Good"

2.0

Room was very small with a weird and unhygienic toilet sink combination that took several flushes to work. Room was dirty as there’s building work going on and all the dust and dirt had been walked in. Communal areas were dirty as well. WiFi didn’t work, smart TV didn’t work. All in all a terrible experience.

"Friendly stay"

10.0

Very friendly, good food. The main building was undergoing building work when we arrived, and was surrounded by scaffolding, but this didn't seem to affect the internals at all. We actually stayed in a subsidiary building just down the street

"Not what we hoped for…"

4.0

When we showed up there was scaffolding around the inn and no signage. We walked into the reception area and no one was around, there was a huge container of empty liquor bottles and a lot of dust. We waited for a while before going into the bar to get help. We were greeted with a big smile and were easily checked in at this point. Our room was not horrible but there were water stains on the ceiling which is always concerning. This place looks to be under construction which should have been conveyed to us prior to arriving. I believe this inn will end up being fine, we unfortunately did not get the experience we had hoped for.

"3 star but could be better."

6.0

On arriving at the Manor House we were unsure of the correct place as there were scaffolding around the building and no signage. We entered the front door where there were a small desk with leaflets on and no sign of a receptionist or member of staff. There were dust everywhere and a hoover just left lying at the bottom of the stairs. The hall furniture and stairs were covered in dust and the stair carpet needed sweeping. We telephoned the owner who told us to come back at 3pm. When we went back we had to go into the bar area as there still was nobody around. A young lad asked us who we were and handed us our room key. We were on the top floor in a twin room. It was evident why the place was dusty as there was work going off in a room on the first floor but the place still was left untouched with a duster. The room smelt damp and the bed sheets were creased so had not seen an iron after they were washed. On a plus the breakfast was very good (we had to fill in a form when we checked in on what we would like and what time, we were told between 7-8am and could be up to 8.30am). The location is also good next to the river and walking distance to the shops and restaurants. The two young boys who we spoke to were very pleasant but we didn’t get to see the owners. They have renovated the rooms but could do with further work.
