Ryokan Inakatei

The house is a beautiful 200 year old home and the owner is so lovely. It’s located very close to the stunning Kiyomizu dera temple and in good walking distance of shops and cafes. The property itself has character and the sleeping arrangements were very comfortable. The house also had a distinct woody smell which I presume is from the age of the building and the fact it’s made with wood and bamboo. It’s a nice natural smell of wood which you don’t really get anymore in newer buildings

The only thing is can be critical (if there is a need to be critical) is that the bathroom was shared between other guests so you could that use the bath or shower whenever you want. But saying that the shower and bathing was very comfortable when we did use it.

Incredible location, charming traditional style, and an incredible and attentive land lady who was so helpful and also very charming despite the language barrier.

The hostess was lovely, very kind and charming and would always come out to say hello when I returned. The small teahouse I stayed in was perfect for a solo traveller, and the location was very quiet and close to several temple sites for visiting.

A very gracious host. The place is the real thing, very traditional, (and I lived in Japan for 4 years, so I know what I am talking about) gorgeous rooms, great Japanese garden, hot bath run for us every night, delicious food, and the inn has been in the same family for centuries. Almost all the extras, like the special dishes were specialties of Kyoto, and the hostess was super friendly, and very knowledgeable about local things to see, with smart recommendations, off the beaten path. I should mention that I speak fluent Japanese, so I learned a lot more than you would if you didn't, but she seems to have lots of experience with foreigners who do not speak Japanese. Yes, it was expensive, but if you want the real thing, in a choice, traditional area, I guess that is what it cost.

There was nothing not to like here. I guess if I was searching for *something* I would mention that if you stay in the "villa" which is a converted teahouse, the step down out of the room is a bit uneven, so not great if you have balance or mobility issues. The other rooms seemed to be all upstairs at the main building, so if you have limited mobility, that again might not be perfect. Anyway, the place is great.

True Japanese experience! Loved the room setup, the bath, and the quiet location in Gion.
