Hagurokan

The property is very well-maintained and beautiful. The bath is very simple, but perfectly clean and stocked with essentials. The room was very spacious and the bed was comfy. The breakfast was always excellent and the one night I requested dinner, it exceeded my expectations and even contained some local specialties. The proprietors are also very attentive and kind. Within walking distance is access to Haguro Mountain, which I highly recommend.

Since I visited in an off-season time, the facility was mostly empty. There were a few times when I was a bit scared because of the quiet and vastness almost entirely by myself, but for some this may be a good thing! Lots of privacy.

We had a lovely stay at Hagurokan. Excellent Japanese hospitality- we felt very welcomed and cared for. The ryokan itself is beautiful, and the traditional meals were so good. Every dish was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The bed was very comfortable. Highly recommend!

The owner, Yoshi-o San was incredibly helpful. Although he doesn’t speak a lot of English (please note, this Rokyan isn’t for your regular tourist, but for someone who wants to get deep into japanese culture), he was keen to understand my broken japanese and even drove me to the ski slope when I wanted to go. The room was stunning with a REALLY comfy bed.

The bath is quite small, and isn’t a proper onsen. This is more about the area but the ski resort is small and only really good for half a day or so.

We spent a night at Hagurokan in mid-January and were the only guests. We were warmly welcomed and really well taken care of. The food at Hagurokan was among the best food we have eaten on our four-week-journey in Japan. Cooked with love.

What a fabulous experience. I highly recommend staying at this ryokan. The owners are so kind and will go above and beyond to make sure you have a beautiful stay. Perfect location to visit mont Haguro, easily accessible by bus from Yamagata. I felt so welcomed and it made my experience of Japan truly authentic. Thank you

Very well-maintained and clean. Really authentic atmosphere. Within walking distance of trail to the shrine. Wonderful hosts, comfortable beds, amazing dinner, and fast wifi. Enjoyed our stay here very much.

Although we arrived too late due to our train connection, the owners welcomed us warmly and even prepared a late dinner. The food was really delicious and the overall experience extremely nice! We felt very welcome. There is a small bath tub and the locations is really good to visit Mt Haguro. We definitely recommend a stay at Hagurokan if you visit the region! The hosts speak English and are very open minded towards foreigners.

We loved everything about it!

The location is far from Tsuruoka but in perfect proximity to Haguro-san, and easy to navigate from the bus stop. We loved out stay here and highly recommend it. We appreciate the owner's kindness also! Thanks for a wonderful time.
