This is a very traditional, small Ryokan. The owner very kindly prepared us an amazing kaiseki dinner, even though we hadn’t booked ahead. The meal was served in the adjacent tatami room because our room had already been set up with our futon beds. We looked out through the trees on the adjacent hillside, glimpsing views of the ancient tile roof of the adjacent temple, and listening to the chirping of cicadas, crickets, frogs, or some other unseen creatures. The dishes kept coming - I can’t remember them all. Our room had a private bath, but you have to go to the onset outside for the proper Japanese bath looking out over Matsumoto.

There was an odd smell when we first came in, but after visiting other places in Japan, I think it is the unfamiliar scent of tatami mats. It is a hot spring resort with a stream running inside the hotel. Because of the humidity and the fact we were there in the summer, when the air conditioning was on, it was a little bit musty.

Both the interior ambience and the gardens were lovely, though the garden would be better if better cared for. We enjoyed our stay there.

The staff seemed like students part timing who were not so familiar with protocols and hospitality. Could see they were trying though. There really should be a backup translation app if the orientation staff cannot speak English at all. The corridors were too dim.
