"Prepare to be charmed by everything"

10.0

Higher Melcombe Manor is a working farm in glorious Dorset countryside, accessed via narrow lanes and interesting villages with a jewel of an ancient house ruled over by genial Simon (he of the friendly twinkle and the eccentric Dexter slippers) and the wonderful Nicky (incredibly youthful mother of four adult daughters, bursting with pride in each one). Your main feeling is that you're being welcomed back by old friends, dogs excitedly greeting you, trailing through the lovely ground floor (3' thick walled and flagstoned hall), country home casual drawing room covered with family photographs, the unfussy spacious dining room (the table seats ten) to the back stairs to our room. Rooms range from Elizabethan splendour to modernised elegant attics with all mod cons including a guests kitchenette and sitting room. The night was silent, the moon was huge, the bed was splendidly dressed and immensely comfortable. Breakfast was incredible, fresh fruits, pastries, the full English from local produce. We fell into immediate friendship with a fellow guest and talked of everything from last night's play to Russian politics to Egyptian archaeology and back to London theatre. After a too brief visit to the Elizabethan chapel (scene of family weddings and local events) and a wander around the gardens we had to leave to rejoin the real world with a sigh.

Nothing. You may not like it if you don't like dogs, or if you expect it to be a 5* hotel rather than a charming upmarket B&B. You will never know what you missed.

"A real gem in beautiful Dorset. Great location, lovely hosts cannot recommend highly enough. Thank you"

8.0

It was beautiful building with an interesting history. The family made us feel very welcome. Nicky and Simon were excellent hosts and made sure we were well looked after during our stay. The 3 dogs were gentle, friendly and well trained and added to the front of house welcome we received.

"The people were nice, the location bad."

We stayed one night instead of two due to the almost inaccessible location of the hotel.

"Top!"

9.0

Absolut ruhige Lage.
