Booking the full experience (including meals, open bar, and 2 half day activities per day) was a splurge, but made decisions easy (which is what we wanted on this trip). Hard to say that it's worth the price, but it did make things simple. After each meal, they present a bill with suggested gratuity (10%), which you can add to the room to pay at the end. How many days to stay is a personal choice, but if you are more mobile and active, you have more opportunities for trekking and activities. A lot of the set tours are offered every other day, and then they have others by request or sprinkled in, so it seemed.
Accommodations: no complaints, everything was nice. Bath amenities included large bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I think that they leave the doors to the rooms open while they are cleaning, which can allow bugs to get in. It generally wasn't an issue, but on our first day, I discovered a mosquito inside our room.
Service: Outstanding!
Food/Drink: We were happy with the food selections and quality at all of the venues: the bar restaurant, the dinner restaurant, and the lunch restaurant were all great. The breakfast buffet was ok. Not the best hotel breakfast buffet, but they did have made to order eggs and omelettes. The drinks were all great!
Activities: The guides and tours were all great. The only exceptions involved a miscommunication with the activities desk and a tour that was cut short.
In the case of the miscommunication, i received a phone call asking if i wanted to reschedule a sunrise tour for day after the next, but when we showed up, there was no sunrise tour that day. We wouldn't have woken up so early on vacation had it not been for the expected tour, and then we did another early wake up to attend the following day's sunrise tour. With precious few vacation days to sleep later, it was disappointing to lose a day of sleeping in.
In another instance, when one of our tours was cut short, i only knew because there was a specific site I had asked about, and was told would be included on that tour. We were repeatedly told that the site in question was easy to visit on one's own, but since we had some mobility issues, and since we paid for the full experience, we wanted to go on a tour. On the day of the tour, we returned without having made the stop, and when I questioned the guide, he said he cut the tour short because of an ill guest. It was completely reasonable to drop off the ill guest, but they could have then offered to continue the tour, especially since it was close to the hotel. The tour guide again mentioned that it was "easy to visit on one's own" and I dropped the issue, because it wasn't worth the hassle.
Also just noting that some guests (and even one guide-in-training) suffered motion sickness during the van rides around the island. The nature of the island roads, the condition of parts of the roads, and the driver skills don't add up to smooth rides; those who are susceptible to motion sickness should be aware.
Departure:
We received departure details the night prior to check out, and realized we'd have time to get lunch at the resort prior to the shuttle's departure for the airport. So, we opted to skip breakfast on departure morning to get lunch, instead. Upon arriving in the lobby the next morning to check out, we learned that our shuttle departure time was moved up 30 minutes earlier (to accommodate the plane's early arrival) and we'd have no time for lunch, after all. The front desk assured us there was a cafeteria at the airport. When the shuttle dropped us off at the airport, we learned that it was too early to even check the bags, and once we checked our bags, we still had a full 2 hours until boarding would begin. Further, we even had to wait in a line right inside the airport for another 40+ minutes for the door to open to allow us into the terminal. The snack bar had not yet opened for the day, and we had no choice but to wait in the heat, in line (having missed opportunities to have a meal or a drink), for the terminal door to open. It was an unfortunate, uncomfortable experience to cap off our visit. It was clear the hotel wanted to deliver us early to the airport to then pick up the arriving passengers. However, it seems that it would have been easy for the hotel to handle separate transfers, especially since the hotel is so close to the airport. It was also frustrating because we didn't need to be at the airport so early, and ended up doing so much waiting at the airport.
Overall: we paid a premium to have a special experience during our visit to Easter Island. Overall, we were pleased (especially with the service and food), but there were just a couple of hang-ups that were frustrating because they could have been prevented with just slightly better communication from the staff.
