Hotel El Velero

Clean, spacious room with great amenities & pretty local decor. Especially enjoyed the A/C & luxurious toiletries. While the complimentary beach towels look threadbare, they double up as a sarong, do the job well, are light to carry & look cute in photos. The hotel decor is nice too, with lots of sea themed ornaments & a lovely seating area on the 2nd floor, overlooking the beach. The location is ideal for accessing Playa Penca & Poor Calzon (highly recommend these quiet beaches - it's a slog of a walk to climb back up but well worth it for almost private beaches!) Also only a 10 mins drive from Playa Coco which has plenty of restaurants & shops. We managed to catch a gorgeous sunset in front of the hotel on Playa Hermosa. In the morning if you walk the beach you can spot wildlife. We saw Congo monkeys on the Northern end, and green parrots towards the south. All of the staff we encountered here were kind, helpful & smiling. While we didn't eat here at all, the food smelled amazing especially on BBQ night. It was a good spot to recharge our batteries after a long, adventure filled trip and just before we travelled back home.

Pool was in the shade and looked uninviting, with lots of leaves, during our whole stay. Upon our arrival at 1.30pm some black stuff was being pumped into it. So we didn't use it at all. Playa Hermosa in front of the hotel is ok, murky brown sand & full of pedlars selling everything & anything. Our room bed appeared deceptively comfortable but I think it was a memory foam mattress which meant we sunk into it. It was very soft & bad for my back. I ended up sleeping on top of a pillow for extra support so as not to sink so much. There is also a frosted window in the room on the hallway side. It let in light from the hallway making it very difficult to fall asleep. Easily resolvable with a blackout blind though.

Great beach with chairs and loungers. Awesome drinks by the beach and we had a great breakfast. I wish we had more time to have dinner as well. Very friendly staff and nice ammenities. Again, I wish we had had more time to do a massage on the beach. Great place to stay in a great location.

Shower pressure was very poor at busy times of the day (barely a drop at times) and would fluctuate between hot and cold Musty smell on extra blankets

Juste les sollicitations des vendeurs qui ordinaire mais pas trop fatigant il demande 1 fois dans la journée si tu dis non c'est fini mais recommence le lendemain

The location is the main attraction: right on the beach in the center of Playa Hermosa. Couldn't have asked for better. The restaurant staff were kind and friendly.

It wasn't clean and the staff were rude and unhelpful, especially at the front desk. Very difficult to get clean beach towels and the rooms weren't cleaned regularly. The beach chairs were dirty, the towels had stains on them. Cleaners came and made the bed and took out the garbage but did nothing else -- left dirty cups, sheets and towels in the room.

El Valero sits right on the beach and is only a half hour from the airport in Liberia. A great place to unwind after a flight.
