"Nice countryside hotel"

8.0

It was my partners 50th, so asked the hotel if they could do anything. They did swan towels, faux rose petals on the bed and accepted a delivery to the hotel I requested for flowers and champagne which were in the room waiting. They were very accomodating.

They seemed a little understaffed at breakfast time, various items of the food kept running out.

"Great location but building not fit for purpose. Disappointing for the price."

4.0

The location is lovely. Close enough to the city but peace and quiet and you feel like you are miles away from the hustle and bustle. Staff were excellent - polite, friendly and professional. The Fat Abbot does delicious chips and the best Baileyโ€™s coffee I have ever had.

Not the cleanest. I found a pair of socks in a drawer so I question how well it was cleaned. The policy of for rooms not to be cleaned unless you ask for this. Needs some TLC for sure. There were marks in the walls and peeling wallpaper. My room was very dark with 2 small windows (which, once opened, were very difficult to close and in need of repair). It also had poor lighting and a very dark carpet which made it feel dark and shabby. There was no hairdryer in the room. The grounds are lovely but there is nowhere to sit and enjoy the solitude. There ARE 2 benches which look as old as Methuselah, very shabby, and in any case covered in bird doings so I was unable to assess if they could be sat on. I was in โ€˜The Cottageโ€™, which sounds lovely but none of the slow closers on any of the doors were working properly and there was constant banging when anyone entered or left the building. The slow closer on the main door, right by my room, was also not working, so 2 loud vibrating bangs every time anyone entered or left. I reported this and the staff were very kind and understanding and tried to fix the outside door, but couldnโ€™t (I mean, a new slow closer is probably what is neededโ€ฆ) and used a doorstop to prevent the door from shutting fully. It was a partial solution, but pretty poor. There was a brief mention initially of moving me to a different room but this was never actually offered and a doorstop is what I got. I was awoken on my second morning at 7am by the banging doors and considered leaving a day early, it was that bad. Definitely not the relaxing break I had paid for. It is not purpose built and the walls and floors do not absorb any noise from rooms adjoining or above. I had a couple with a toddler above me (God alone knows why you take a toddler there) but he ran back and forth all evening and again in the morning and I heard every step. Breakfast was pretty average.
