Great atmosphere, nostalgia and relaxation.

Breakfast was absolutely outstanding. Location was excellent. Landlady went out of her way to welcome us and explain everything.

This is our fault but we hadn't realised that they didn't serve food after 5pm on Sundays.

The only thing remotely likable about this property was its location.

From the moment we made the booking, there was no communication from any of the staff, unlike at other hotels. We had no communication that the car park would be unusable as the main street was closed off for two days for an event. From the moment we walked in the doors of the hotel, the staff were not very friendly. After we got the attention of someone and were shown to our room, we noticed the carpets were grubby with large, dark stains both in the hallway leading to the room and then in the room itself. We were then informed that the hotel would be having live music until 11:30pm. Initially we did not think it would be a problem as we have stayed in pubs and were never bothered before as the hotels usually do a good job of making sure the rooms are quiet. That was not the case at The Black Bull. We went out for a couple hours after checking in, but when we returned, the pub was even more crowded and the musician was setting up for the live music. When we got up to our room, that was when we noticed that the noise from below had gotten significantly louder in our room. We could hear entire conversations and even people shrieking below. We knew that once the music started, that there would be no possibility to sleep until after the pub closed at midnight. That was when we decided to leave and drive the 3hrs home. When I went downstairs to find a member of staff to give the room key back to, I once again had a hard time getting anyones attention. Once I did, I asked for the person in charge. I first spoke a man. After I explained the situation about how loud the hotel was and how it was going to be impossible to get sleep, the man just shrugged as he did not care. I asked if there was any possibility of getting a partial refund as we were never informed that the hotel would be so loud of have music playing until 11:30 at night. He told me that this was a pub snd there was nothing he could do.

The property was in a great location, an added bonus was the free parking. Rooms were lovely and warm and the beds were comfortable. The staff were very friendly and happy to answer any questions.

I think the rooms could have done with a couple of small drawers. Service was slow for breakfast in the mornings.

Staff were really friendly. Was easy to check in by going to the bar and being shown up to the room. Both our evening meal and breakfast were really tasty.

Central position. Friendly welcoming staff who couldn’t do enough for us. The food was absolutely delicious, served by happy , considerate staff who were interested in our feedback and who did all they possibly could to ensure our stay was enjoyable.
