KALA Khiva

Kala khiva is a magical cute place in the middle of the old town through winding little alleways. The room was big and clean, and had everything that we needed. The owner was very welcoming and as my boyfriend speaks fluent Russian they exchanged lovely conversations together. He's a very interesting man, who has a thorough knowledge of Khiva, he's even written a couple of books about it. The breakfast was plentiful and very filling. We enjoyed an evening on the terrace and they served us plov, salads and melon. The terrace at sunset is simply majestic, the view is divine. We absolutely loved Khiva and we were very happy we choose to stay here. Thank you very much!

Great position, the top roof something magical, very quiet, soft lights, and near the ancient walls, it looked like a fairytale.

The host was extremely kind and helpful. He helped us find a great deal on our "fortresses" tour at the very last minute (he even explained to us that the real cost of a whole care for this tour is a maximum $55 - in reality, I think we even paid just $45 the guy he found for us). He shared with us a book he had written (or co-written?) on the history of Khiva and surrounding areas, and he also told us a very interesting story about a research project he had with Mennonites and a museum he had opened in their memory (as we understood, they were driven out of the area and fled during WWII). He was very relaxed and welcoming. It was not very clear to us, but it seemed that this guesthouse was family-run, and the person whom we understood to be the daughter spoke good English. Two of us in the group understood and spoke Russian and communicated with the host in that language, and the other spoke only English, and they were able to speak with the daughter. The included breakfast was filling and satisfactory. The location of the guesthouse, within the ancient city walls, but away from the bustle of the main tourist area of Khiva, was excellent. Bathroom facilities in the rooms could do with a little touch-up, but the place is excellent value for money.

The male reception asked me about my birthplace. He said it was required to be filled in some touristic database. We travel a lot around Uzbekistan and noone ever asked me that question. My foreign friends were told where they crossed the border last time. Pretty weird experience

Friendly, family-run guesthouse. The owner is happy to talk about local history with guests. The breakfast was good and the common areas were lovely, including a roof-top terrace for sunrise / sunset over the city.

The beds were a bit hard and the rooms need hard floors or fresh carpet.

Tiny not comfortable room on ground floor , very hard not comfortable bed, very steep not safe stairs to the roof top. We departed very early, no breakfast packed, or earlier was offered..
