Stadthotel Regensburg

Really easy check-in, perfectly adequate room, and very calm comfortable neighborhood. Bonus: the nearby bakery is really good (Bäckerei Café Ebner Kumpfmühl)!

The check-in process was very smooth, and I was able to check-in late during the night with clear instructions that I received from the hotel manager/owner.

The hotel was relatively close to the Central Station and the City Center.

The hotel walls were so thin that I could hear phone alarms and people yawning in the next room at 5 in the morning. The pillow on the bed was so thin I felt I slept on an empty pillowcase. The shower knob was very difficult to turn on and needed even more strength to turn off, making it difficult to even take a shower. The room had no curtains, only blinds on the outside that didn't cover the windows completely, so anyone from the parking lot could see inside the room. As far as safety features are concerned, the smoke alarm was sitting on the windowsill with the battery half-out of it. There was no staff at reception during any of the time I was there, and that was problematic for a number of reasons. The pin code needed to enter the building wasn't the one I was emailed in the booking confirmation, so I had to call the hotel number to get the right one. The man who answered was very curt and seemed annoyed that I had trouble entering the building. The wifi password wasn't displayed anywhere, so instead of calling the hotel number and dealing with that curt man again, I didn't have access to the Internet while I stayed there. Also, I ran out of toilet paper, and there was no one at the reception who could ask to bring me more. The room seemed relatively clean, but there were hairs on the bed and in the bathroom. All in all, an unpleasant stay.

The hotel was totally un-staffed during my three-day stay. I went in and out of the building typing a passcode on a keypad. I picked up and returned my room key at the front desk without any staff present. It was impossible for me to communicate with anyone at the hotel before or during my stay. I was lucky to have a friend who lives in Regensburg who could phone the hotel reception number. I never received any written communication from the staff, despite my frequent messages, sent using both the Booking.com app and by email. The person who spoke with my German friend on the phone said they could not speak English, despite English being included as a language spoken in the list of hotel amenities.

Helmut was fantastic. He could not do enough to accommodate me. The hot water was virtually immediate when needed. No wait. Security was excellent. The neighborhood is safe and conveniently located, to the train statiin, old city (altstadt) downtown, with a 15 to 20 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride. A supermarket and great restaurant are 5 minute walks away.

I had to move onto my next location.

A heater in the bathroom can make some good difference.
