Ella Rock Grun Cottage

We were lucky to start our Sri-Lanka trip from this place - it was such a nice introduction to the beauty of the nature, local people, their hospitality and traditions! The house is away from the road, surrounded by tea hills, rice fields and the jungle and its sounds. The hosts are a young couple, Dumindu and Nethmi - very modest, sweet, attentive, helpful and always smiling! And they cook like the gods! Very simple and extremely tasty! Dumindu also knows everything about local plants and how they can be used in Ayurveda. It was so interesting to learn from him the things which people from the local village transfer from old generations to the young ones! And the more questions you ask, the more you learn. The house has only 2 guest rooms, it is a lovely and very comfortable jungle house, and that’s why it is perfect - don’t expect it to be a western type of hotel. Here you feel more like you are a part of the family, not just a hotel guest. Some practical things: Ella cottage is on the way to Ella Rock, so you can be the first at the rock for the sunrise))) it is also just 10 min walk (in the railway track) from Kithalella train station - very easy to buy train tickets and take the iconic train, which you can stilly see from the house 3 times a day. Buy the third class for the full experience and don’t forget to stop for food and juices at the River Face Restaurant Ella - delicious! We really enjoyed the remote location and getting to see some farm life. We had a nice hike to Ella Rock from our accommodation. Our host was very kind to show us around the area and explained how to do the hike. We had a nice dinner when we arrived that was very reasonably priced and tasty. I highly recommend it if you want to do the hike or get into the countryside away from the city.

There’s a short walk from the parking lot to the accommodation but it wasn’t an issue for us because the host carried our luggage and we just had backpacks to carry.

Très belle vue reposante depuis le logement. La famille est au point soin pour que le séjour soit agréable. Les dîners que nous avons pris étaient excellents. Pleins de bons conseils et arrangeants pour nous aider en venant du centre ville.

Perfekte Lage für eine Wanderung zum Ella Rock. Aber etwas außerhalb von Ella. Der Gastgeber war sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Wenns nur nachdem ginge, würden wir mit 10 bewerten.

Das Zimmer ist schon etwas in die Jahre gekommen, was aber grundsätzlich nicht stört. Jedoch hat es im Zimmer sehr muffig gerochen und im Badezimmer wars no schlimmer. Vielleicht ist es auch nur ein temporäres Problem, aber der Geruch war leider sehr unangenehm.

Amazing location. Large comfortable rooms. Lovely owner. Very quiet. One train stop before Ella but make sure you are in the middle carriage as there is a very short platform. Good breakfast and dinner.

All good. More blankets or a sheets as gets cold at night.

Le couple d’hôte est adorable! Ils ont tout fait pour rendre notre séjour merveilleux! Nourriture locale au top! Lieu idéal pour se ressourcer et être à l’écart de Ella qui est très touristique !

Owner is amazing. He helped us with our baggages, provided car parking and a tuk-tuk driver who gived us a ride everywhere we wanted in reasonable price. Host is also avaible via whatsapp, so You can ask Him for what You need. Need dinner at 8:30pm? No problem. You even could do a walk by the train tracks directly to Ella. Food was very good, including dinner and breakfasts served on time we preffered. Room is very spatious, clean, with beautiful view.

Only thing to improve? Well, maybe better lightning inside room. :)

The host was very nice and helped us with everything. Location is pretty, calm place. View from the room is beautiful. Perfect location for Ella Rock climb and you can also go to Ella among the railway.
