I stayed at the Hebbers Inn, just near the old grand station you know from postcards, and it was unforgettable. The building itself is a piece of living historyโ€”an old colonial structure that hasnโ€™t been modernized, but thatโ€™s part of its charm. Heavy wooden doors with iron locks, beautifully tiled floors, stained glass windows, and teal-painted walls under high ceilings make the space feel timeless. The balcony opens onto warm, soft air where palms sway against the monsoon sky and black kites glide past, adding to the dreamlike atmosphere. Itโ€™s the kind of place that doesnโ€™t need to prove itselfโ€”it simply is. If youโ€™re looking for something authentic, full of character, and steeped in history, Hebbers Inn offers exactly that.

The location of the property is excellent

The rooms were really hot because of the heat. Consider booking the dorms which have air conditioning if staying for longer periods in the summer.

"Suitable for experienced backpackers"

I had a delicious masala chai here offered by one of the staffs. It was the best one I had during my stay in India. Please have 10 rupees ready. I did not have small coins and could only give half. If someone had the chance to have the tea, please give what I collected for me. Location was nice, close to many shops and restaurants. Overall it was an introduction to India for me.

As a woman traveling on my own I felt unsure. It is great they close the gate for security reasons but at times there were no one to open and I had to wait. The check in process was rather odd as I had to wake up one of the staffs sleeping on the floor on the other side of the gate. Some communication beforehand would have made me more comfortable. The room gets very hot. If you are someone sensitive to heat, look for AC equipped hotels.
