Waitomo Homestead Cabins

Functional basic detached cabins, clean and warm, what we expected. They are about 30m from a very busy road, so there was traffic noise. There is a house with kitchen lounge and bathrooms. It's on the same site as a large farm shop and cafe so the food was good. The staff were not on site as we arrived late but were easy to contact and helpful.

For the price and experience, this place was amazing. Upon first impressions I didn’t think much of the space but honestly had the best nights sleep of my whole trip in this place. It was warm, cosy and took me back to my childhood, I felt 12 again having a sleep over with a friend. The cleaner was the best staff, she gave us loads of great advice of where the locals go to see special sites and honestly, I’d go wherever she advised cause it beat the tourist attractions.

The reception was a bit odd but I assume because it was New Year’s Day the place was busy, it’s obvious the team are not used to that kind of rush.

Nothing, we couldn’t stay in our room.

We couldn’t stay in our room because it was so hot. It was not a hot day at all but at 5pm when we arrived tired and ready to crash, the room was so unbearably hot we had to leave and book another room at a motel down the road that luckily had availability. A black tin box in the sun is a torture chamber not something you should accept money for people to sleep in.

Homestead kitchen and lounge facilities

No towels . We travelled internationally & paid Queen /linen . This was frustrating not to have a towel to use after shower . Then there was a washing machine with no where to hang wet laundry .

Windows of cabin were dirty and impacted view Table on balcony not useable - filthy We asked for this to be cleaned but didn’t happen . Perhaps offer towel rental for guests or add towels as option .

The cabins were close to a busy highway, leaving a lot of road noise. There were no fans in a hot room with 4 sleepers.

Very modern feeling cabins, got most of what you need, and a nice large area to prepare and eat food, and hang out in the lounge. Good location nearby the caves. It was very empty when we visited so it was nice and relaxing to be in the area.

The main impression we will leave with is that the room was like a sauna. A wooden cabin that soaked up the summer sun all day - even with both windows open and a fan, it was nearly unbearable. It looked like there may be a fan in the wall for ventilation but it wouldn't work. Bring your own towels. Trucks on the motorway are pretty loud, I imagine some cabins are worse than others. All in all not a dealbreaker, but wasn't the most seamless stay of our trip.

I liked the cabin and the homestead.
