Bass Lake Country Lodge

The food was incredible and the environment was very relaxing.

Beautiful, picturesque location. The food was excellent. It was lovely and quiet most of the time except for some very noisy, drunk dinner guests on the second night. Very quiet at night which ensured a good night's rest which was greatly appreciated. The pool was lovely although it was cloudy all weekend. The dam is beautiful and very photogenic. The valley was green and very relaxing. There are some lovely walks and beautiful photo opportunities wherever you look. We drove through the property when we left and saw impala, wildbeest and zebra. Lots of birds too.

The food service was exceedingly slow, both nights we were offered our desserts before we had received our main courses - three hours for three courses is too long. The venue does not seem to be able to cater for the large number of people eating there which is a pity as the food is excellent. The waiters weren't able to answer basic questions about the food or drinks. It works out quite expensive when nothing is included in the room rate. Tea and coffee were charged extra at breakfast. The background music was often too loud and intrusive in such a lovely setting. I would much rather have listened to the birds and insects. The Valentine's Day picnic was every expensive for what was included (R450 per person with a bottle of sparkling wine). The lights outside the windows which are on all night were annoying. Lights should rather be placed lower down to light the pathway rather than right above the windows.

Facilities, cleanliness and good food.

Limited cellphone coverage.

A hidden gem. No children under 12 allowed in the lodge which means there is peace and tranquility, only the sound of the birds. There is a stunning camp section too where kids are permitted. Swimming pools on the property. The attention to detail such as turning our blankets down before bed with a piece of fudge, the mini bar, the friendly staff the good food. If you are on MTN there is no reception, but this was good for me as I tend to check and respond to work emails, this forced me to rest and forget about my phone. We booked a budget room, but there was no budgeting about it...a smart tv, firm mattress, mini bar, etc. We had a ceiling fan but I think in full summer or during a heatwave we will book a room at the lodge with an aircon.

I recently had a shoulder op and didn't think that a bath would be a problem, I should have asked for a shower. But that is my oversight nit the lodge. Maybe just the bathroom light could be a little brighter
