Smiley's Homestay

Cecilia and Smiley will help you with your every need. They organized a guided trip to the volcano, transport to our next stop and even helped us book a ticket for the night bus from Medan to Banda Aceh. Cecilia is a great cook, so prepare yourself to be amazed!!

Amazing hosts and great location in Berastagi. The tours are fantastic, and the food as well. The owners can help with everything, transfers, give recommendations, and so on. Had a great time!

Pricing was a bit intransparent, only discussed when asked, and for the food quite high. Also, I find the price too expensive for a shared room.

They are very friendly and helpful and the food is really good. And at the moment there is a small really cute puppy =) The beds have been very comfortable.

We were welcomed by Smiley & Cecilia and instantly felt at home. We couldn’t have hoped for better hosts, Smiley is a walking encyclopedia considering Sumatra (and more) and knows all the best places, tips & tricks and happily shares them. He’s also an amazing guide. Cecilia is an amazing cook & her breakfast treats (best banana coco pancake ever, super yummy home made bread,..) are out of this world. We stayed in the family room, which is basic in comfort but has a hot shower and everything you need to have a nice stay. We didn’t need aircon as it really cooled down in the nights. In my opinion you don’t pay for the room but for the atmosphere, the hospitality and the insights of the hosts - that you just cannot find on the internet. We were sad to leave & if we’re ever back in Sumatra we already know where we will stay! Highly recommend.

Smiley and Cecilia who run this guesthouse are the most welcoming and caring hosts. They will go out of their way to help you with anything you need. Smiley offers tours of the volcano, hot springs, markets, bird watching and jungle treks. He is very knowledgeable about local culture and wildlife and is a great guide. Cecilia is a great cook, who makes delicious breakfast, including homemade bread and if you let them know in advance she will go to the market for ingredients and make a delicious local lunch/dinner for you. She also offers cooking classes, which we unfortunately did not have time to do, but I’m sure would be fantastic. The guesthouse is clean, comfortable, with good washing facilities and wifi. They are planning to renovate to allow more guests to stay. I wish you all the luck with the expansion and hope you get many guests staying with you. You were both perfect hosts from the lovely tea on arrival to arranging our onward travel for us, you made our stay in Berastagi very special. Thank you!

After the jungle this was a supernice welcome for us. Great beds, Hot shower and fresh baked bread. Loved breakfast and Dinner too!!!

Rooms are clean. Location close to town. Nice to spend time in a homestay and see a local way of life.

Communication with the hosts was off. They did not respond to our questions at all before our arrival (though she mentioned it was her son's birthday). Smiley himself didn't greet us or introduced himself. In the evening I asked for a breakfast to go for the hike, but I got no response and we left without. Once returned we got our breakfast which was delicious but 80k per person for one pancake, tea and a fruit plate is a bit much... considering dinner in a nearby restaurant was 120k for two people. Check in was rushed, we couldn't ask questions and we didn't receive any towels or the wifi password. The mixed dormitory room was badly isolated and loud. Any time the water (toilet, sink, shower) is used, a machine makes an annoying sound that went on for most of the night.

Cecile prepared a wonderful breakfast. 200.000 (a day we 2 of 4 had been sick and had just a tea) to 320.000 is a lot anyhow for 4.

The room has no window out of glass but out of wood. So it's completely dark the time it's closed. No mirow at the sink that has been taken from a kitchen to be used in the "bathroom".
