Smiley's Homestay

Cecile, she is a wonderful and friendly woman who makes delicious food.

Smiley is unreliable. I booked to do a sunrise hike with him but he was not there as he decided the weather was too bad even though it wasn't. His tours and shared taxi prices are way more expensive than others. He is also often rude if you decide to do things differently to how he would.

Smiley and Cecelia are incredible people. We felt welcome from the moment we walked through the door. There is a lovely homely feel about the place and it’s very relaxing to sit out on the balcony to share a meal, hang with the other guests and be charmed by Smiley’s singing and big personality. We had a fabulous trip around Mt Sibayak with Smiley, who is very knowledgeable about the area and Indonesia as a whole. He is a local legend btw. He also took us to the hot pools. We ended the day with a cooking class from Cecelia, who is an impeccable cook and kind person. We learnt so much and absolutely loved it. Their pets are very cute and their dog Dodo even walked us up the hill to watch the sunset. Their family are lovely too. Smiley arranged all our transport which was very helpful. If you are debating where to stay; look no further - you won’t regret this stay.

Loved everything about it! Smiley and his wife are exceptional host. The food is amazing. They both are super helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to things to do in the area, where to visit next and how to actually make it there.

The breakfast at smileys is just stunning!!! Best breakfast you will find in Sumatra with self-made bread and banana-cupcakes. The room was big and clean with a nice terrace and a beautiful view. The hostel is located around 15 min walk from the center away, near to a nice viewpoint where you can see the sunset. Smiley ans his wife are such nice people! I would definitely go againg!

Amazing room with super comfy double beds. Had a beautiful breakfast each morning with proper wholegrain bread (!) courtesy of Cecilia who is a brilliant cook. This is a proper homestay and we felt right at home. We did a tour with Smiley up the volcano which was a cracking day out, he really knows his stuff about the area and the nature. Very grateful to this wonderful family for having us and making sure we had such a great experience.

We absolutely LOVED our stay, Cecilia and Smiley are such lovely hosts and we would absolutely recommend their place to anyone staying in Berastagi! Cecilia is an amazing cook and prepared delicious breakfast for us, and Smiley took us on a hike to the volcano and knew so many facts, we had the best day out with him. The room itself was great, the beds were so comfy and we slept really well :)
