Cabañas Tico Gringo

We stayed here for eleven days in January 2024. Absolutely loved the place. Other reviewers have described it well..., the friendly and helpful hosts Sonia and Tico, the wonderful setting just on the edge of the busy little village of Drake, the endless entertainment provided by magnificent birds, iguanas, and (with luck) monkeys, agoutis right in front of our small deck. These experiences rivaled the fabulous tours that we took while in Bahai Drake. We are 73 years old with bad knees. At a very slow pace  it took us usually 20 - 25 minutes to walk up from the beach through the charming village to reach our cabana's idylic setting - worth the trek every time. Grocery stores and retaurants are within a 4 -10 minute walk. We enjoyed the proximity to the village as opposed to the more opulent and isolated experience offered by the many eco lodges in the area. FYI, Drake has no ATM's. VISA is widely accepted for tours, restaurants, groceries, etc., but you can save yourself 13% tax on everything by paying in calones. Calones are readily available at the San José airport and can be purchased using a VISA/MC card. Hosts Sonia and Tico could not have been more friendly, helpful and generous in sharing their slice of paradise with us. This has been our best vacation ever.

There's nothing not to like. Oh yeah, the orchid blooms hanging over our deck fell off after a short downpour 😁.

Gorgeous view with great biodiversity and many bird species to be seen from the porch. The hosts are the kindest people. Beautiful inside space.

Nothing, everything was perfect

The property was exceptionally clean, spacious, and comfortable.

Gorgeous property with lots of flowers and trees that the birds loved. We saw so much wildlife from the front and back porches. This is a perfect location for bird lovers! It’s about 10 minute walk to town which makes it close enough to get to easily but far enough away to be peaceful and more inviting for wildlife.

If you have mobility issues it would be difficult to get to some of the cabins because there are many stairs. Ask about a cabin with easiest access.

- helpful and friendly hosts - middle of nature (saw a couple animals and birds) - AC in the bedroom - huge! - full fridge - provided water - shower / bathroom was a great size

- no real cons just info that you might not notice - AC only in one bedroom. Worked out for us - little further from than the main store/restaurant area, about a 7-8 min walk and 15 min walk to the bay. Personal preference but seems like a lot of options are similar - bring your own shampoo and coffee

The beautiful location on the edge of town with a lovely peaceful garden where we saw Toucans, hummingbirds, Acouyte and also Capuchin (white faced monkeys) on our balcony!. Gringo and Sonia were really friendly and helpful including taking and collecting us from the boat and the Coravado tour booked through them. Simple accommodation but had everything we needed

This place is nice appartment just above the center of Drake Bay. It's situated next to the road but very quite. The whole village and also this place are really friendly and calming. The hosts Tico and Sonya are so helpful and provide you with everything you need. A ride to the beach (the walk can be strenuous for older people because of the heat and because it's a climb up and down) was always offered by Tico when we had an excursion booked.

Drake Bay is a small village. There are no luxurious hotels etc. But that's also why it's so charming and authentic.Tico Gringo is clean and perfectly situated in nature but has a simple small kitchen and bathroom. The airco only cools down the bedroom, but that's okay. With the fan and doors opened in the afternoon it was hot and humid but fine for some hours.

Loved sitting on the balcony watching all the birds, iguanas, monkeys and agoutis that came past, the best view we've had our whole time in Costa Rica! The owners were really friendly and tried to help us as much as they could, providing us with water and putting out bananas to attract the birds. The apartment had everything you needed to cook and was very clean (and cleaned midway through our stay).

Great hosts were so nice and so helpful : drove us to and from tours & helped with booking trips; we had air conditioner in the bedroom (so good!); our own little balcony; basic kitchen facilities, plenty of space , free wifi. Not luxury but great basic accommodation - all you need.

Really nothing! Tico & Sonia only speak Spanish but we didn’t find this a problem.
