Johnstone Apartment by The National Trust Scotland

Excellent location, clean, surprisingly quiet.

Spiral staircase is incredible, would be very difficult for anyone with ailing joints or mobility issues. Teabags and coffee would have been welcome. We didn’t think to bring some with us.

It is a great location to see the castle, Royal Mile, cathedral, Royal Palace, and other sites in the historic section of Edinburgh. We spent two nights, but one day in Edinburgh, and this location gave us the opportunity to get to where we wanted to go with no lost time. We were also able to get a brief rest at the apartment before going to dinner at a nearby restaurant. The apartment is comfortable, up to date, and great for two people.

The instructions on the entry location to the building need to be clearer, since it is located in a courtyard with multiple buildings. We asked some locals in the courtyard for assistance in finding the entrance, and they too could not. The entrance to the building did not have 477 Lawnmarket to identify it. The passageway to the courtyard just had 477, but it then led you to multiple buildings, each of whom could have been the building for this rental unit. We called the host with a borrowed phone, who then helped us identify the right building entrance.

Location is perfect, apartment is nice and cosy with no outside noise, alot of amenities, dishwasher fridge etc. Tv with alot of channels and netflix, good heating, was very clean.

Only minor issues, one of blinds in bedroom was broken on check in, it was partially open and couldnt be closed or opened any further. We alerted property management and sent a message through Booking and received no reply which was a bit disappointing. A sponge for hand-washing could be added as didnt want to waste energy on dishwasher for only few bits, but again only a minor issue.

The host is actually nice and helpful in giving us detailed email on ways to get to the door and the code. It was clear explanation to get into the room. Unfortunately as i'm from abroad and travelling at odd hours we arrived kinda late (before 5pm) and we are unable to get into the room with the code given. The number was directed to the answering machine Thus, we had to go for another hotel which cost us another inconvenience. We even went to the Visitor Centre seeking for their help, the staff over there is very helpful and they help us although its after office hours however we still unable to get anyone to help us to get through the door, If the number given directed to a person perhaps it would be different. I can see potential in that place as it is located in the centre of the historic place and near to the castle. However, i can foresee that the walking up stairs to an apartment are not suitable for senior citizens.

Location was awesome. Comfy bed, shower worked well and quality fixtures throughout. Only 150 meters from Edinburgh castle. The history of the building and Gladstone’s Land was pretty special to stay and sleep in.

I thought it was a little on the pricey side, but was booked during the fringe festival and the Edinbrgh tattoo.
