Alexander House

The apartment was very comfortable and fully equipped for all our needs. It was centrally located, easily acessible and given that we were staying over Christmas Day and Boxing Day, it was warm and homely.

Unfortunately, the shower in the bathroom did not work after the first day. The host did give advice on how we might fix it, but we were unable to. As we arrived on Christmas Eve, it was I guess impossible for the host to fix it, but this did make things not as comfortable or as perfect as might have been. The old bath shower connection made washing possible, but not ideal as it cut off once held above waist height.

Its close proxmity to the centre of town in terms of local shops (greengrocers, local butchers and a coop) Also a local bus stop near by which has good connections with a bus service 231 or X31 (Mondays to Fridays) from Bath spa bus station to Chippenham via Corsham run by faresaver

As a family we could use a washer & dryer for a longer stay but otherwise quite suitable. Could do with some minor aesthetic repairs but they were of no issue to us.

Unfortunately, nothing went well.

Grotty plus misrepresentation. Unusually grotty and unusually severe misrepresentation. That’s a powerful combination, and we cut short our 4-night booking as soon as we could. There was a kitchen, and almost everything in it had crumbs or smears from previous visitors on it. We didn’t even want to boil water in the place. The bathroom had perhaps never been cleaned, so far as we could tell. There was a smear of a previous visitor’s undetermined body fluids on the wall beside the toilet. The toilet bowl showed months or years of buildup since it was last cleaned; ditto for the walls of the shower. In the living room, toenail clippings from a previous guest adorned the couch. We should have taken pictures of these things, but alas, we were in too much of a hurry to leave. But usually grottiness isn’t enough to turn us away from a bad place. At Alexander House, it was their misrepresentation. It’s clear that Alex has more than one unit to offer, and the nice pictures and good reviews from that place are prominent on this site. They do not resemble Unit 4 where we were assigned. We had been attracted by the site’s promise of a “large double bed”. According to furniture shops we consulted, Unit 4's bed was the smallest possible that could still be described as a “double bed”. And the mattress on it was a few inches smaller than the bed frame. Our booking confirmation came back enhanced with “Garden View”, “Desk” and “Free wifi”. Nope, nope and nope. Why even add these things which didn’t much matter to us into the communication? It displayed a fierce determination to tell us things that simply were not true. We have a long history of traveling and booking independent places. We only once before complained and left a booking early.
