The property was lovely and spacious. Clean and tidy. We loved that we had plates and cutlery. And the slippers were a lovely treat. We were far enough away from Brighton that there wasn’t any drunk people around late at night. But, it was close enough to stroll into town. Honestly perfect location and perfect property. Minus the pillows.

Unfortunately the only thing that let the property down was the pillows. They’re made of a paper/plastic cover and they were awful to sleep on. I recommend either taking your own or that the host replaces with better quality.

Simple but high quality rooms. Excellent bathrooms, loved the double shower - would have used the massive bath if I was there for longer.

I love the location, great to have the pub downstairs and there's a lot of great pubs in the area too. Great that it's situated right across from the bus for the train station and a co-op. We always make use of the TV, there's plenty of channels and that we can cast onto it aswell. The bed is quite comfy, duvet is nice and thick. Great to have the kitchenette especially the fridge and the large bathroom and bathtub are why I keep coming back. The complimentary sewing kits, toothbrush and paste etc are a nice touch too.

I've been staying here a few years, mainly solo trips but I feel like I've noticed a slight decline in quality in some areas. The pillows are just plastic, might be a hygiene reason behind this but they're not particularly comfortable. The kettle was full of limescale so we didnt make use of it. We stayed in the Alaria room (my favourite out of the 4) this time and one of the bulbs was out over the mirror/desk. Some small issues with the shower as top of the handle for the shower head popped off while turning down the heat. Seemed to be torn wallpaper above the toilet which just made the place feel a bit shabby and there's green paint on the floor (probably from a past guest I've no doubt) It doesn't really feel like there's anyone to report any issues to, as there seems to just be one person working in the pub most of the time. Overall these are all small issues but as it's a little on the pricier side it would maybe be nice to see some small maintenance, as we hope to continue choosing the maris and otter over other places.

"Disappointing stay - disgusting toilet and never been deep cleaned"

4.0

Location was conveniently near to Brighton centre and Hove. Well refurbished. Some serious money and professional craftmanship has been spent to make the room nice (just not maintained to a high standard - see below - which is a shame). Bed was comfy and sheets were clean. Windows were double glazed sash. Not critiques as such - as it is an old pub - but the room/building shakes when the buses go past, and we were right above the main pub on a xmas karaoke night, which went on till 11:30pm. Just highlighting in case anyone is a light sleeper. We slept well all things considered, and we can be light sleepers. I think the double glazed sash windows helped block out noise from the street.

Overpriced. Cleanliness was very poor. Most notably the toilet, which clearly hadn't been professionally cleaned. Urine on the underside of the seat and faeces/puke on the ceramic bowl. It looked like a quick wipe had been done on the top of the seat, but not much more. You'd hope that they don't get bar staff to do the cleaning, and instead use a professional cleaning team - but who knows? If I was bar staff and made to clean hotel rooms, I wouldn't be happy. Whoever's doing it, owners/cleaners/bar staff - they definitely need to up their game! The room is in need of a very deep clean, toothpaste marks on wall by sink, thick dust in the corners around the carpets, general stains here and there. Glasses provided were full of dust or perhaps towel fibres? I.e. not the sort of cloth you should be using to dry a glass. All round just seemed like a low amateur level of hotel room maintenance. We emailed the hotel to complain, so they could rectify, but nothing was done. They offered a complimentary stay, but frankly we're not interested in staying somewhere again with that level of uncleanliness, especially at the high price of £129 a night. Disappointing stay in an otherwise, well refurbished room.
