Beachfront penthouse with panoramic ocean view

A very nice and spacious appartment with everything you need at an unbeatable location. Clear view all over the bay with stunning sunsets directly opposite the beach on Grand Bays main road.

Leaving as the filth was making me feel ill. I am still waiting for a refund.

We booked this accommodation for five nights but left after one. In my experience of extensive travel, this was the most concerning property I have encountered in terms of safety, hygiene, and general condition. Safety The property is located on the top floor of a largely empty shopping mall. From 6pm, the only exit route involved going down two flights of stairs and unlocking a rear door and a metal gate. This raised concerns for us about how we would exit quickly in an emergency. There were also electrical issues: we saw sparks from the kitchen light switch, and some light fittings had exposed wiring. The gas cooker was fuelled by a bottle stored under the sink, which we did not feel comfortable using. The extractor fan and light covers had a significant build‑up of grease. Hygiene The property is filthy. We noticed stains on the curtains, thick dust on the blinds and bathroom window frames, and dust and debris under the beds and in the frames. There were marks on the walls. One of the bath towels provided was filthy. Overall it felt poorly maintained, with minimal cleaning between guests. Quality and maintenance Many fixtures and fittings were in poor condition. In the main bathroom, the bath surface was peeling, chrome fittings were worn, and the WC had visible cracks. There was a large crack in the ceiling with peeling paint. In the second bathroom, the shower tray was heavily stained. Around half of the light bulbs were missing or not working. The kitchen’s saloon‑style door was missing one half. A lamp in the second bedroom was broken and propped against the wall. There was an old microwave and a shirt left in the wardrobe, and the safe did not work. Communication We raised all of these issues with the owner, but they did not accept our concerns and refused a refund. They were extremely patronising and selective in what they responded to in our messages. I twice requested a copy of the Tourism Authority licence from the owner, but did not receive it.

Admittedly, the location is good and easy access to the beach. The building itself is grand, with many beautiful plants outside. It is an older building and you can see signs of this outside as well as inside the apartment.

Everything apart from the location was awful. The apartment was filthy. The furniture was old and stained. Dust everywhere, grimy surfaces and high touch areas like the lights witches and door handles were so disgustingly dirty I felt sick. There were toothpaste marks in the sinks and on the bathroom shelves, hairs in the shower and an entire ants nest in the second bathroom, the toilets were not cleaned. Rodent droppings and dead bugs were on the floors and windowsills. Trash like empty water bottles and gum wrappers were left behind. The host replied quickly to my complaint, however was unhelpful. Within an hour of arriving, I stated I wanted to cancel the booking and receive a full refund as we hadn't used the facilities and would not be staying. He left my final WhatsApp message on read, and then through Booking.com refused my refund request as he stated the accommodation was satisfactory, blaming the owner for being "French and traditional".
