"Not for everyone, but we wouldn't stay anywhere else"

8.0

We have been coming to Zihuatanejo once or twice a year since the 1980's and after the first few years we discovered Bungalows Pacificos. Yes, the upkeep is not perfect but huge flower-covered terraces with unobstructed views of the entire bay, the perfect location within an easy walk of town, the pier, Playa la Madera and even Playa la Ropa, the family-like sense one experiences with owner Anita and maids Sinida and Carmen, the Sunday trips for barbecues on Playa Blanca hosted by Anita, and yes, even the dogs and cats loved and cared for here are all part of the ambiance. We love it and so do our extended family members. If you require A/C and TV, it is not for you. But we will continue to enjoy its unparalleled beauty and uniqueness.

"Awesome View & Nice Place!"

8.0

Stayed here recently with my 3 grown sons. View of the bay and close proximity to the town was great. Very clean and Anita the owner showed me great hospitality. Balcony was huge and made my stay with my sons a great place to spend family time. There were some cups missing so we asked and got what we needed. All the fans and appliances worked well, things were clean but of course not new. Anita may not walk that easily down stairs so ask the maid if you need to speak with her and then go upstairs to the front door. Lalo is her driver and Carmel is her maid - very.... nice people..

"Ghastly, a Nightmare and a Rip Off !"

2.0

What a pity ! The website, the location, the view, the deck and the hummingbirds were all very impressive. It really is beautifully located above the Playa Madera. Unfortunately there it stopped. The reality was truly horrific, and we know because we mistakenly set out to clean the pigsty in which we had found ourselves. We had arrived late at night, and went out for dinner. It was only the next morning, after a shower in a dirty and broken down bathroom, whose only good point was that the water was really hot, that my wife began to notice how dirty the place was. There were tiles missing and the soap dish was absent. Without really thinking, because, if we had, we would have left straight away, we went and bought cleaning materials. Their floor brushes were all worn out and in need of replacement. The rubber floor scraper more or less worked. We bought floor cloths, cleaning cloths and cleaning chemicals, though they did admit to having chlorine. First of all, we noted that there were not enough mugs for the four of us, only two. The coffee pot was missing the glass jar. Then there was the dirt ! This place had not seen a good clean in a good long time, though the maid claimed she had cleaned it out the day before ! The large bed in the bedroom was filthy. The white cloth below the sheets was loaded with dust and no amount of shaking it and beating it would get it clean. The maid obviously knew how dirty it was, because she said " I hope the dust did not get back into the bedroom !" Below this white object there was a rotting sponge rubber layer that was so old as to be falling to bits. Below that, on the mattress itself, there was a layer of dust, the likes of which I have never seen in my fairly long life ! We asked for a vacuum cleaner. Finally it arrived, but it did not work ! The maid claimed that she had asked for it to be repaired but the owner never would. The dust we physically removed, the hard way. The area where clothes were hung was greasy and at the bottom of this area there was a lot of dust and dirt as well as a crab, so long dead as to have cobwebs all over it. The overhead fan was rusty and dirty, looking as though someone had smoked cigarettes there continuously for half a century. Brown and dripping ! The floor, the walls and the lamps were filthy. The lamps were well rusted. In the passage way to the patio or deck are two beds. Not very comfortable as they only have a fan above and no ventilation. When we took the beds to bits, there was a plentiful supply of mouse excrement in the sheets as well as dust and dirt on the floor and a good supply of ants ! There was also a lizard, but we left him alone. He might actually have been doing good. The sheets were not fresh and clean, as they had the mouse stuff right in there. The coffee machine lacked the jug ! There were filters ! No coffee. There was a half filled bottle of what was probably drinkable water, though we did not risk it. In the kitchen the cutlery and cooking utensils were all rusted and dirty. The stove had several burners that would not light. The fridge was rusted outside, and dirty inside. The pots and pans were old and dirty as well as the structure that supported them. The patio had old furniture and although there was a hammock, though not very user friendly. There were towels on the porch furniture. Not clean either. Nor was the tablecloth on the table where we ate on the deck. But the view was great, and there was a lot of room. It could have been very comfortable. Obviously one could have taken one's beers there without noting the dirt, but we did notice. When we started to clean the patio, that was the end. We left. There was no internet facility, forget high speed internet. Though the owner did tell me over the phone that she had internet. But when I tried to see the owner to complain, the maid recommended we go, as if we stayed till she got back, apparently after 5 pm, she would certainly claim another day's rent, and the maid suggested she could be extremely abusive. The final blow was that the agreed rent of $105 per day had been unilaterally increased to $125. I did not pay that, nor the complete balance, as the maid had no change. She told us that the owner left every morning with all the money. So I could not recover the money or time spent cleaning, though I told the maid where we were staying, if the lady cared to come and argue, complain or give me a credit ! Actually, we never saw her in all the time we were there. We spoke Spanish, so it was no great loss, but it seemed strange until we worked out what was happening. Then it became clear ! This is a cash cow. No money is ever spent. The money earned goes into the owner lady's pocket. She has no interest in either supervising the work of the maid, or getting the place sorted out. So the maid also gets away with doing very little. What work she does do is on the top apartment which surprisngly belongs to the owner. Also the owner likes payment into her usd account in b. of a. so she pockets the tax she charged. There is no basis under which to describe the hotel, in the list below. "No frills" yes but absolutely filthy and negelected. No a.c. and no tv. but one can live without that. It is a disgrace. To the owner as well as to Zihuatanejo. The owner takes from the customer, leaning on her rather quaint European English to con the Americans, and Turismo of Zihuatanejo permits this to continue. But 100 yards up the street for a little bit more dollars, we had two self contained bedrooms en suite, internet access with ac, cable and individual bathrooms, plus a separate and well maintained kitchen and access to one of the best restaurants in Zihuatanejo. This is part of the Hotel "Brisas del Mar" and actually not that much more expensive then BP, but it was rigorously cleaned every day, clean sheets, and that included fresh towels for the beach. Absolutely fantastic value. And nice people. If you do make the error of spending a night at BP, stay in the bungalow half way down the stairs on the left. We cleaned it !

"We just returned from here and this place is the dirtiest and the ripoff of the year"

2.0

I thought the web site looked good too. I only wished I had read some of these reviews before I went. Marsha the owner wanted me to pay the entire amount to her B of A account. Fortunately, I only paid for two nights...$100.00 each. We got there late and tired...couldn't stand the filthy, run down place. The refridgerator was rusted with a dirty old dish towel covering the top. The sink was grose and the bathroom had a sink that was coming apart and an old bar of soap in the broken dish. The bed sheet was thin and frayed. The porch was falling down the cliff !!!! We have traveled alot and never been in a place like this . We asked for our money back and the owner wouldn't talk with us. We left and found Bungalows Ley down the way: fantastic view, clean, great help and only $80.00/night.

"not worth the money!!"

2.0

We booked this place because it had a nice website, but we were sadly disppointed to see how run down it was after we checked in. Our pillows were gray, there was a rotting egg carton cushion on our bed, and ants all over the place. The first day we had to ask the maid three times to clean our room. The deck has a great view, but the furniture is old old old and very uncomfortable. We ended up moving to Bungalows La Madera, which was less expensive, had a beautiful pool, and beach access. "Anita", the owner, never showed her face to talk to us and we did all transactions through the maid.

"You can do better than this"

2.0

This was probably a pretty nice place at one time, like when Cortez was there. Its a two-bit hotel with a million-dollar view. The rooms are old and run down. Ours had a kitchen, but the stove didn't work and the coffee pot was parts from three different coffee makers, none of which added to one usable machine. Its obvious that the owner has made the decision to suck money of the place without reinvesting a dime. The only nice thing I can say about it is that there is hot water and good pressure in the shower. For a $100 US per night you'd expect something more. If you're on a tight budget and you have high tolerence level, go for it. If not, keep looking.

"Dirty, dingy...terrible!"

2.0

This place is dirty and dingy and old. It’s the kind of place where everything is so dirty that you’re afraid to touch anything. My arrival was a joke. I was not greeted by the innkeeper, Anita (I have never NOT been greeted by an innkeeper before). No "hi," "hello," "glad to meet you"...nothing. She screamed down something in Spanish, which I didn’t understand, from her upper level balcony to other woman who works there who spoke no English. The other woman showed me into this strange, awful looking room which I thought was some weird waiting area. I thought she meant for me to wait there for Anita. When Anita didn’t show, I asked for her again, and she screamed down from balcony above, “what, you don’t like the room?!!” Only THEN did I realize that was meant to be MY room! I said I’d like one on lower lever, closer to beach. That room was just as bad. The toilet didn’t flush and hadn’t been flushed by last user. There was a dirty frying pan in kitchen sink. Bed was okay, but sheets were threadbare. And there was something splattered on the walls. Looked like blood, but surely wasn’t. Don’t know what it was. Tablecloth was dirty. Kitchen appliances and utensils were a disaster (see attached photos). It was a nightmare. This was the most horrible experience I’ve EVER had at an inn. EVER! I travel a lot and stay at a lot of small inns, so I have plenty of comparison. This place falls well within the category of DUMP. Especially for the price, $85/night, it’s outrageous. I’ve stayed at many places for far less money, with breakfast included, that were beautiful. I would've left immediately, but had paid 2 nights' deposit. I cut my stay in half. Just couldn’t stand it. BP misrepresents itself drastically on its website. Wish I’d read the review “it’s a total ripoff” below before I'd gone. Don’t let the website fool you!

"Perfect for those avoiding resorts"

10.0

The Bungalows Pacifico was just what we were looking for. My friend and I treated ourselves to a week in Zihuatanejo, leaving our children with our husbands so we could spend a week relaxing in the sun. We found Bungalows Pacificos by cross-referencing internet reviews and guidebook suggestions. It was the perfect place for us. Why? First, it was on Playa Madera, closest to the town of Zihua and less resort-like. Second, each bungalow has a large, private terrace. I estimate ours was a good 600 sq. feet and provided both sun and shade. We spent hours on our terrace talking, eating light meals, reading and napping. The intererior is not fancy but it felt clean and comfortable. We particularly appreciated the endless sterile water supply, the refrigerator for beer, fruit, and yogurt, and being able to make coffee in the morning. We walked to Zihua a couple of times a day, walked to Playa de la Ropa, ate in the neighborhood cafes. The proprieter and her daughters were lovely to us, informal, and helpful. To us, Bungalows Pacificos embodies the spirit of Zihuatanejo. I am looking forward to returning and hope to stay again at the BP. I have talked about it so warmly and so often that my family wants to return with me next time.

"A total ripoff"

2.0

Is it any wonder there are no room photos of this low budget hotel but priced higher than better hotels in the area? The hotel has had no updates for over 30 years and it shows. Cracked tiles everywhere, stained beds with egg carton foam mattresses to fluff things up. The bathroom tiles were chipped and missing and it was dark with only a 50watt bulb, so hard to tell if it was clean. The kitchen had very, very basic utensils that were rusty and tired. Few decent dishes and ugly set-up. There is very little ambience to this hotel. The views are great but the amenities severly lacking and the hotel overpriced. Get a receipt when you leave or you may get an email saying you didn't pay and how will you be paying? A scary idea when you are still in town and at another htoel and face immigration on the way out. There is no common area to meet other guests and little balcony privacy from neighbours. The owner is nice and knowledgeable but she needs to tweek the place to bring it up to standards. We were terribly disappointed and bolted after our week there. We also experienced a theft there. Overall, it's dingy and dreary and lacking atmosphere and real Mexican flavour. Signed, Very disappointed and will never return.

"Bungalows Cucarachas"

2.0

We planned to stay at this place for three days during our stay in Zihua. We had read a good review of it in Lonely Planet. Also, to our pleasant surprise, it was mentioned positively in an article in the in-flight magazine that we read on our way down to Mexico. Also, as you see there are other positive reviews of it here on this site. But, for some reason, our experience of this place was COMPLETELY different. The room was horrible: dingy, old, rundown, dark, dusty, inhabited by cockroaches. The staff was rude to us. The best thing about this place was the beautiful view, but EVERY place on the bay in Zihua has a fabulous view. This place was so bad that we only stayed for one night and lost some of our deposit. It was that bad.
