Holbox Isla Bonita

I liked the idea of staying here from the promotional photos. I should've read the reviews. The staff once found, as there is no reception, did their best to communicate in Spanish, non of the staff spoke English. The AC is a welcome addition to the room which I have to say isn't bigger than most apartments available throughout Holbox as the advertising blurb suggests. Free drinking water is available from the communal kitchen where there is a 4 ring gas hob and a sink with hot water. There is no hot water from the sink in the apartment neither is there a cooker just a microwave, a kettle and a fridge.

I didn't like the quite noticeable greasy layer on the surface of the pool. The shower was a disappointing surprise. It spurts out a fine mist like a hosepipe with a puncture. The TV never worked. It can't find a signal! Four days into our booked week and the electric went out. This is a regular occurrence in Holbox but usually gets fixed fairly quickly. After a few hours we realised everywhere else had their electricity back but not Isla Bonita. So in broken Spainish and simple English along with help from a bilingual shop keeper we were able to ask a member of staff if our electric would be returned soon as the room becomes stiflingly hot very quickly. With the promise of it being fixed within 1½ hours we waited outside with our feet cooling in the now still unfiltered pool. By midnight we gave up! We found alternative accommodation through people we knew so we could sleep in an air conditioned environment. We returned the next day to discover nothing had happened and wouldn't for another day. We had to find alternative accommodation. I have to say communication with staff once you finally track someone down is difficult without Google Translate, because of course without electricity there was no WiFi, but Yareli was a very helpful member of staff and promised us a three day refund. I wait with anticipation to see if this refund occurs.

The room was nice, but there was no one working in the hotel. I thought it was a good value, but I found another hotel for the same price with a lot more amenities. The location was pretty bad as well.

The location is not that far to walk from the ferry but the roads were so flooded we had no choice but to wade through puddles. It's not very close to the beach or any places to eat. When we arrived the door was shut and we had to phone to be let inside, around 6 pm. Some other guests were drinking and partying outside next to the pool until 2 am and in my opinion staff should not allow this- this is a hotel not a hostal. The pool closes very early, at 8 pm.

location was a little off the beaten path with a flooded street (not their fault) and they leave the main door open all day.
