Thomas' Retreat Bukit Lawang

I had a wonderful week in Bukit Lawang, and a significant part of that was thanks to Thomas and his entire team at "Thomas Retreat." The restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes. The more expensive rooms are particularly well-equipped and comfortable. The outdoor area and garden are well-maintained. And the prices are fair and reasonable. Thomas is an experienced host and an expert on the national park. He takes care of his guests with warmth, hospitality, and a wealth of information. Whatever I needed or wanted, he organized it. For example, he arranged a night walk with a snake specialist! Naturally, he also assists with further travel planning and is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to bus schedules, routes, or local specialties. The jungle trek is unforgettable, as is the multi-course meal prepared by the cook in the middle of the rainforest by a picturesque river. Thomas also gives his guests the opportunity to experience village life, whether it's a traditional wedding or the weekly market day. I definitly hope to be back one day.

Thank you so much! We had a great time! Thomas is really nice, speeks english fluently and organized everything for us (airport pickup, jungle tour, luggage storage). The Guesthouse is really comfortable and clean. We did a 2 day 1 night jungle trekking tour with Dino and Hikal and it was great! Both were so nice and caring. The food was amazing. Dino told us everything about all the animals and nature and of course we saw Orang Utans. Also he was always funny! Highly recommend !!!

It’s a great place to stay. Rooms are clean and spacey en the beds are very good. Location is great as well. We loved our stay with Thomas. We arranged our jungle trek with him and also a bike trip (which is something we would recommend, it was great). He works with good guides, but also with good drivers. We arranged a pickup from the airport with him and also the car to Berastagi. His prices are right, also in the restaurant. If we would come again to Bukit Lawang, we would come back to Thomas’. We are a family with three kids.

The retreat was beautiful just on the end of the river, they have seating there too, a great place to have dinner and watch locals tubing and makeshift surfing. Thomas the host was extremely accommodating, he helped arrange all activities and transport to and from the retreat. The other staff too were very entertaining and friendly. The jungle trekking was phenomenal, our guide ren was so cheerful and knowledgable about the jungle, and an expert in foraging. We were able to see more than just orangutans, rare birds, lizards, insects and other monkeys too. He and his team made my trip unforgettable. I’d highly recommend staying here and trekking with these guys.

Thank you so much to everyone that looked after us at Thomas’ retreat. We had the best time in the jungle and our tour guide, Ren, was great! So much fun, lots of good food too. Amazing experience seeing the Orangutans. It was a great stay before we went and they helped us organise everything. Would highly recommend ☺️☺️

Great Location, lovely Host and Staff. Very good local food - one of the best chicken rendang I ate so far. The Organisation for the Jungle Trekking was also fabulous.
