Sumatra Orangutan Discovery Villa

Very personal. Got to know all of the staff and they were so helpful with organising activities, food and cars for us. Had the greatest time at this accommodation. Rooms were comfortable and the fan was a great touch on the hot days. I also loved the dog and cat on property, they were adorable!!

Incredible hosts, beautiful property and a once in a lifetime private trek. DO NOT BOOK ANYWHERE ELSE. This place will leave a lasting impact on you… we can’t thank Dedi, Rahmat , Tondi, Tyson or Master enough. From picking us up at the airport after a delayed flight, to cooking us delicious meals, and teaching us all about Sumatra’s flora and fauna we cannot fault our stay. Thank you so much again 🙏

I liked that it was in a very quiet location away from crowds. My room was spacious. I enjoyed my time there.

There was not a cook always available.

We arrived after a long journey and were welcomed at the property by very friendly staff with a refreshing fruit drink The rooms were very comfortable ( a little hot but ok with doors open and good mosquito net) The small restaurant offers a good selection of meals which are freshly cooked to order and very tasty The location is outside of bukit luwang which is ok as you can easily walk in or the team will arrange a tuk tuk Generally very quiet apart for some motorbikes every now and then passing ( but this is very typical in Sumatra no matter where you go) Very beautiful scenery Thank you to Tyson and crew for a great stay

We booked a jungle trek and I think the usual Sumatra orangutang discovery guides were all busy so I am not 100% sure we had the best option for the trek as our guide seemed very tired having been up until 3 the night before and then staying up until 4 whilst we camped overnight so I felt we were a bit unlucky with our guide. Even so we had a great time in the jungle , seeing the orangutangs made up for any shortcomings.

We loved our stay here in this tropical garden oasis. The room was well appointed, clean and the bed was super comfortable. It's a 20min walk into Bukit Lawang village, which means it's nice and quiet. Meals are delicious and reasonably priced and you can fill up your water bottles for free so there's less plastic waste.. They picked us up from Medan airport and have us the option to share with another couple arriving at the same time, so the cost was less. It's a standard 700k per car from Medan to Bukit Lawang. We did a 3D2N trek with them and it was such a memorable experience. We saw 11 orangutans on the first day! We had Joko as our guide and he was exceptional. The hike was harder than expected with the humidity and steep trails. He was so patient and considerate giving us a shorter option for the second day so we arrived at the campsite at lunch time. Glad we took the easier way as it rained heavily from 3pm and we could just relax instead of trudging in the mud. Highly recommend Joko as he's so experienced, knowledgeable and considerate. The food is also impressive given everything needs to be carried in. Thanks again for an incredible experience!

Just note it is a bit of a wait for your meals so try to get your order in early for dinner. It's part of jungle life!

The room is basic but the staff makes this place incredible. We did a jungle trek overnight and stayed in the jungle one of our nights. What can I say? I was just as comfortable in the jungle as the room. It's not a bad thing but make note there is no AC and no hot water. Again, the staff are who make this place what it is--and the dog too! Treking in Sumatra is also an incredible one-of-a-kind experience.

Oof. We ended up leaving a day early to get back to the ocean. Very hot and not a lot of relief from it. We ended up getting paired up with an older couple for our jungle trek by the company and it turned out trek into a pretty rough experience. I would definitely recommend a private trek if you are with a group that don't appear to be the same skill level as you are. I really wanted to love this place because the staff was so wonderful! But honestly, it was not a great experience. And make sure you have long socks for the leeches! ;)

There was nothing we didn’t like. Comfortable beds, beautifully decorated room, amazing tropical garden, delicious food in the restaurant, the well organised and executed overnight tour into the jungle (yes, we were lucky to see orangutans in the wild) But it is the people working at the Orangutan discovery villa that made our stay unforgettable - highly hospitable, accommodating, genuine in every way. If we are ever to go back to Bukit Lawang it will be the this place.

Room was better than expected from the photos. Enough food options and good size portions. Staff were great, with genuine friendly and personal service (it only sleeps 6 so you are never many). The location on edge of town is very nice to unwind, with plenty of shade around a lovely garden. We did the Jungle Trek and the Village tour with them which were both great too.

Nothing really. It is basic accommodation but it is not pretending to be anything else.
