Rock Castle Residency

Breakfast was nice. Hot water availability was good. Room was comfortable.

Lunch and Dinner should be available at any given day. Good vegetarian food is needed by many.

Lovely garden, very helpful staff, great location and comfortable beds.

Rooms are a little cold. Otherwise everything was great.

Clean spacious room, beautiful view

Rooms and bathrooms are very spacious and clean. Rooms have fans too, which was necessary for me in the month of Aug. Breakfast was simple, in-house dining option is available too. The owner was very helpful, he shared info and helped me plan my trip itinerary, helped me book cabs too. Hotel is located about 10-15 mins walk from the market, which is a little bit of a climb while coming back from the market.

I liked the large rooms, I liked the staff, I liked breakfast, I liked their filtered water, and I also loved the view. Almost all the decks have a view of Stok Kangri and the surrounding mountains. The garden is also very lovely, and it is pleasant to be on the property surrounded by the tall trees. When you arrive, the hosts typically offer coffee and biscuits which is very pleasant after a flight or long journey to Leh. The Rock Castle is conveniently located to city center and it’s no more than a 10 minute walk downhill to reach all the shops and dining. The way back home is uphill, but isn’t too bad and is a nice way to get in shape/acclimatize for your time in Leh. The Rock Castle is extremely close to the trailhead to Namgyal Tsemo and surprisingly close to Shanti Stupa which is across town. The staff at the Rock Castle is second to none. The owner, GonKhar, is around and amenable to any requests you have. He has excellent dinner and shop recommendations and we also found out that he runs a trekking company from the hotel- we definitely would have used them if we did a more advanced hike than Markha Valley. The rest of the staff carried out suitcases to our room, made breakfast, and even offered same day laundry! As for the rooms, they are spacious and the beds are comfortable. The rooms also have large bathrooms with a lot of hot water for showering!

This is a hard question because everything was perfect. I had one cold shower but that was because the hotel was full and I tried to take it late at night. Obviously the solar water heaters work best in the day. The WiFi also could have been stronger in our room, but all we had to do was step outside to a balcony or hallway. It’s good to disconnect.

Location and staff

We enjoyed every bit of our stay at RCR! Gonbo and his family were super friendly, hospitable and helped us out with everything. He knows the area and will help you the best he can even in situations of distress. If you don’t feel like walking too far in the evening, one of his staff members cooks really good food with vegetables out of their garden. Ps. The beautiful garden is a nice place to rest and read if you become ill in Ladakh, we speak out of experience ;)
