"Interesting property but broken lift ruined the experience."

5.0

Good location near the train station. Interesting history. Friendly staff.

The lift broke on the first day of my stay and I was told it would be down for a week. My room was on the 3rd floor. With bad knees, I could not easily navigate the stairs and only went up and down once a day - I just stayed in my room in the evening rather than have to face the stairs. Checking out was a miserable experience because there was no one in reception to help me with my bags. I had to turn my largest piece of luggage on its back and slide it down the steps behind me. The property might always want to consider refreshing some of its linens/towels. I am sorry to write something negative about this very interesting property and its friendly staff but leaving patrons to muddle through without an elevator really negatively impacted my stay .

"Welcoming, historical hotel in a great location"

10.0

Warm, welcoming staff made the stay feel personable. Great location just outside Micklegate Bar & medieval walls so we were able to easily walk to all we enjoyed doing in the great city of York including walking on top of the walls. Once circumvented we started using parts of the wall as a lovely way to reach the next experience or walking tour. It is also very convenient to the train station. The Bar Convent is an interesting heritage building in itself & a lovely, small museum to trace the history of the building and the education of girls.

"Enjoyed our stay but the comfort could have been better"

7.0

The breakfast was good, especially the cooked breakfast. The home-made granola was delicious. We were told on arrival that the hot breakfast was £8 extra so only my husband had it, but when we came to pay we were not charged so maybe the hot breakfasts were included in the room rate. The location near the train station and Micklegate was perfect. Being able to see the chapel was a real plus. And the garden is very beautiful and peaceful although the weather did not lend itself to sitting outside.

The bedroom window opened over an air-conditioning unit in the courtyard which made a loud noise all of the first night. The shower unit was old fashioned and made the water either very hot or very cold and the pressure was not very good. The window in the shower-room did not open and even though we asked for it to be open, no-one did. The photos on the site made the rooms look more modern than they are in reality. There are no rooms with bathtub which is a shame. I thought the price we paid was high considering the lack of modern facilities in the bedroom.
