The bathroom floor wasn't clean. There was dirt and hair around the toilet and in the corners that were still there after I requested a room service 2 days later. The extractor fan wasn't working so the bathroom was very damp. There was mould on the floor and walls and a slug in the shower. The wardrobe couldn't be used to hang clothes as the smell inside was too musty. I understand the problems with damp rooms and buildings but there are things that can be done to help residule moisture in the air. I used the small heating unit after showering and opened the windows. For the amount I paid for a 3 night stay, I was a little disappointed with the standard of the room. I didn't find the host overly welcoming to me personally, as a solo traveller. On my final morning there at breakfast, I wasn't greeted. Having worked many years in hospitality, I know it can be a hard job, but fundamentally being friendly to your guests is important and goes a long way in overall impressions. I was excited to be visiting Arran for the first time, which is a beautiful island and I had a wonderful time exploring. However, sadly, I would not stay at Strathwhillan again.

"Avoid room 1 at all costs"

1.0

The host was nice when we arrived.

Had 2 rooms booked. Strong smell of damp smell throughout both rooms and the space outside the room. Room 2 was ok, comfy bed. Room 1 was awful. The mattress was thin, it was sunken at both sides, so it felt like I was either lying uphill or downhill. The smell of damp was really bad. Stepped on a black slug on the way to the bathroom one night, and have come home with flea/bedbug bites. The sheets were yellowed, threadbare and torn in places. Rooms promised garden and/or sea views, couldn't see anything. Old cobwebs, dust, mould, you get the picture. Breakfast was average, coffee was awful. On day 1, my daughter only had cereal, but she prodded the butter dish with her fork. Day 2 we sat down, the same fork was lying from yesterday with the butter marks on it. Day 1 an open, half-used sachet of nutella was lying open in the jams dish. Day 2 it was still there, despite bowl being replenished. Have given the host the chance to respond to my emails, but haven't heard a thing. This may be a "cheaper" place to stay, but I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a clean space to stay. Ruined my holiday, I had an awful feeling in the pit of my stomach during the day knowing I had to return in the evening.

"Good location but room could be improved."

6.0

Good location in nice old building., easy to find and had parking. Host was friendly and the breakfast was nice.

Our room was small and the bathroom was minute - a real struggle for too very tall people to manoeuvre in and out of it. The room definitely needed updating as it was rather tired.
