Guesthouse Mintaro Hut

Mintaro Guesthouse offers an experience which cannot easily be found! After my arrival I was asked to attend dinner with the host, staff and other guests to enjoy food and drinks. The dinner was donation-based and featured a variety of delicious food and some guests even pitched in and would prepare a special dish or offer some top quality sake. I had a wonderful time talking and eating with everyone. It was like being part of a family!

An absolutely gem hidden in Yamagata. The owners are friendly and welcoming and make every effort to make you feel at home and help you find your way around while in Yamagata. Dinner is optional but I wouldn't miss it and was glad that I didn't, beautifully home cooked dishes that were absolutely delicious, with a good selection of drink to accompany it. Close proximity to two train stations makes this a breeze to get to as well. They cultivate a wonderful warm atmosphere which made this among the best stays of my 6 week journey around Japan.

The owners and staff were very kind, the owner even Cooked something vegan specifically for me! If I am ever in the area again I will definitely stay here again!

Probably one of my favourite hostel in Japan and I've been to MANY. There are not many affordable hostel in Yamagata area much less one that is walking distance from Yamagata JR Station. It's around 10mins walk from the station and walking distance from major city attraction. Clean and affordable facilities. Toilets & shower room with full set of toiletries are at level 1. The hostel staffs cooks a free dinner that is available to all guests every night and it was a great homey experience interacting with the staff and guests. The shared space also has a cozy wood stove and cats! There is ample parking space in front of the house and a lovely Japanese garden behind. The staffs were all very kind and friendly and my room was simple and tidy with all the basic facilities I need.

I don't really have any complains about the place but morning check in was a little confusing as there was officially no staffs in the morning. But I was able to enter the house and leave my luggage behind
