SUN SET HOUSE

This property and the hosts were exceptional! We really felt like we got to have an authentic experience for our one night in Monsanto. Lovely place to stay, great views, and a wonderful breakfast. The hosts were very friendly and helpful and made us feel at home.

Amazing experience in an amazing town!

Was perfect !

Per Eloíza's message, I called when I arrived in Monsanto, and waited at the parking area (which was lovely with an incredible view; it's not like I was standing around in a gross parking lot). She came and picked me and my luggage up with her ridiculously tiny car, and drove me to the property on what I would describe as narrow pedestrian walkways. She mostly speaks Portuguese but we had no trouble communicating and she was quite charming. She gave me a simple map of the village and castle, which was helpful, and per my previous request had made me a dinner reservation at one of the very few local restaurants. The accommodation was great; both an upstairs and a downstairs, with a washer and kitchenette. The decor was rustic and homey; this is not a sleek hotel but a place with character. Half the upstairs is taken up with the giant boulder the house is built against. It's Monsanto; if you don't like boulders, why are you here? The breakfast the next morning was delicious and delivered to my downstairs table right when I'd requested. Eloíza drove me and my luggage back to my car when requested.

The decor might not be for everyone, but it's still better than a soulless corporate hotel.

Proprietress met us with her small EV to carry our bags to the building through the narrow alleys of the town. She and her husband were extremely attentive to our needs. The home was spacious and quaint (with a boulder in the bedroom!). We really appreciated the washing machine. Breakfast the next morning was substantial, though we wished we had booked for another night.

It wasn't entirely clear where we were supposed to park (we didn't see the cannon), but I knew from past experience not to try to drive into these small towns with their narrow alleys. There was no room in the parking lot, but we were able to find a place alongside the road partway down the mountain. There were no instructions on how to use the washing machine, so my wife went on-line and created a cheat sheet for future patrons! Our overall experience was exceptional and we will recommend Monsanto and The Sunset House to our traveling friends.

The place was amazing! We loved the charm and the atmosphere of the place. It provided us the true experience of the most Portuguese city in Portugal. The location, the cleanliness, the furnishings, everything was excellent. Our host provided the most amazing breakfast in the morning. Not only delivered to your door but came in and set the table. Elozia put out a breakfast spread of fresh breads, eggs, cereal, yogurt, fresh sliced fruits, juice, milk, coffee, prosciutto, cheeses and some pastries. Our hosts Elozia and Fernando were fantastic and made us feel at home!!

The only thing I didn't like about the stay was that I wished we could have stayed longer.

Lots of charachter, quirky, lovely hostess, nearby dining and drinking. Easy access to walk to castle. Nice porch to sit out on. Exceptionally beautiful rock formations.

No apparent heating. Had a fireplace but it was hard to keep a fire going with size of wood provided.

Staying at the Sun Set House was one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. Words simply fail. It is quaint, authentic, and built around a boulder. The best part is having the owner meet you in the parking lot and take you in a small electric car to your room. I would recommend bringing a dinner picnic. Breakfast in the morning is provided and could not have been better.

The little house made from stones is located in a small, beautiful village. The house is very beautiful, unique and cosy, in the kitchen you'll find all the essentials and a fireplace, the bed is very comfortble. Our host Eloisa was amazing, she went above and beyond to make us feel at home even though we stayed there for only one night. Breakfast was fantastic, it had everything one could need and I especially appreciated her attention to my request for gluten free products. Great experience, would recommend to everyone!
