Yoitsubaki Machiya House

Amazing ambience staying at a traditional Japanese house. As soon as you arrive at the house location, you're immersed in the traditional Japanese feel, fitting for Kyoto. The footbath and garden was lovely. Futon beds were comfortable and the house was very spacious. Bathroom was amazing; it had a shower area along with a bath and footbath. Kitchen also came with induction cooking and a portable induction stove to cook at the dinner table. Housekeeping came to provide new towels/bedsheets and collect rubbish after 3 nights and were very friendly.

Location was a bit hard to get to with baggage; slight uphill walk from Kyoto Station about 15 minutes.

The house is very beautiful and feels like a traditional Machyia. It's very close to the railway but we did not hear the trains at night.

It lacks a bit of crockery. We were 5 and it was a bit short. Be careful, it is a traditional Japanese house so you don't have black curtains or shutters in the room!

This house is incredible wonderfull. Everything was so nice and we felt the japanise style all the time. Very helpful and nice staff at the reception place.

Beyond expectation, fabulous space to experience traditional Japanese stay. Crew is very helpful and good at English.

It’s a bit away from JR or other metro system, so mainly have to travel by bus. Community is a bit rural although it’s close to JR Kyoto station on the map.

The Machiya house was gorgeous & tastefully renovated with a fusion of traditional Japanese style and a modern twist located in a quiet neighborhood. The house was clean, neat and tidy with comfortable beds & futons. It was a nice experience enjoying a cup of Machiya coffee from the Japanese living tatami room with a nice view of the courtyard. Also enjoyed the soak in the bathtub with a courtyard view. Appreciate there are 2 toilets in the house (1 on upper floor & 1 on the ground floor). We had a memorable & relaxing retreat at this Machiya House. ♥️♥️♥️

Nothing much negative. Just would like to suggest for some Japanese bamboo roller blinds be installed on the windows in the bathroom so can give some guests an option of privacy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Yoitsubaki Machiya house and would highly recommend to people who are looking for unique luxury accommodations that are clean, comfortable and convenient. Well air-conditioned, combo washer/dryer that works well, plenty of dining options nearby and convenient access - everything we needed for a family of 4 with 2 kids visiting Kyoto in the early summer. The house is located in a quiet and clean neighborhood that has lots of good quality mom-and-pop dining options nearby. We had one of the most memorable (and affordable) meals our our trip to Japan at a small 6-seat tonkatsu restaurant that was within walking distance from the house. All the main sights in Kyoto are easily accessible via public transportation. Because the property is maintained through the Machiya Inns & Hotels, guests can avail themselves of complimentary restaurant reservation services through the Machiya front desk / concierge which is a huge plus, and an important advantage that you cannot not get through Airbnb and even at many hotels. I would not hesitate to book again, and we are already looking forward to our next stay in Kyoto at a machiya residence.

The only reason I rated this property a 9 instead of a 10 is that the main washing area upstairs had a faucet that looked like it was glued on and was very wobbly. The faucet was functioning, but its poor condition was very out-of-step with the rest of the house, which was very well-maintained. I suspect that this will be identified and updated quickly.
