Hot Water Beach Surf Sound Cottage

Comfortable and homely.

The location was good for access to the beach…just a short walk. Parking was fine.

First so that one doesn’t think we are being unduly negative, we stayed at 16 different places during our 5 week drive through NZ and every place we gave very favoarable ratings. This accomodation just wasn’t good. Now let us describe why so you can decide for yourself if you want to stay or avoid. We paid in advance for four nights and after one night we decided we would have to find other accommodations and absorb the added expense. This was painful to do financially. When we notified the host we were leaving early, so we would not be liable should something go wrong when we were supposedly staying there, the host never inquired why we were leaving early or even answered our text to say they got our message. Upon arrival we found there was no Internet, we contacted the host who came and was unable to get it up and running. We asked for two extra towels as there were only two towels offered and we thought we might want a towel to take to the beach. The host said she’d be by first thing the next morning regarding the Internet and towels She came between 1 and 2 🤷‍♀️ ( the Internet did finally work👍) It wasn’t part of the contract…but EVERY place we stayed provided milk and sugar for coffee. Not here. The instructions for staying there talked about what to do if a variety of things happened…water might stop running, power might go out etc. ?? It was as though they weren’t keeping the place up…the mirror that was on the wall in the photos posted on booking,com was on the floor, the comfort of the dining area was not comfortable, there wasn’t a waste/trash bin anywhere in the house, just a recycling bin. The blinds in the bathroom did not work so there was no privacy. ( Perhaps others feel that because there were not many neighbors this wouldn’t be an issue, but it was for us) The house was extremely cold in the morning and we never figure out if there was heat. ) This place has such potential, but it just misses the mark at this point in time.

The house’s location couldn’t be better, very near the beachfront. Restaurants between the house and street ere good, but the house had a decent kitchen so we cooked in a few times. The house itself was comfortable, clean and quiet. The host was responsive, helping very quickly to get internet service working after we arrived. It is a beach cottage so isn’t fancy, a nice experience along the road of our holiday.

Great location for the price. Easy walking distance to the beach. The beds were comfortable and everything we needed was there. A simple space to enjoy with family.

Lovely sunny, quirky, comfortable and well equipped house in an ideal location. Just a couple of minutes walk to Hot Water Beach, two cafes and a gallery. We were sorry to only have one night there.
