PERGOLA Cottage

Location was ideal for us, as we were visiting friends who live in Gattonside

Bed in main bedroom, was a bit hard for my liking, I ended up sleeping in the single bed

A great home from home, spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped. I would say that the cottage has been recently refurbished to a good level. It is a short, scenic walk across the suspension footbridge to the lovely town of Melrose with its many quaint shops, pubs and restaurants, plus the abbey. There is also the Michelin star Seasons restaurant just a few meters down the road from the cottage. Large number of lovely walks nearby too, plus it's close to the Borders Hospital, which was the main draw for us on this visit.

Sorry, but the bathroom is a real problem with its limited head-height. Whilst it initially appears quirky, anyone over 5ft 10" and/or with mobility issues is going to struggle getting in and out of the shower, which is in the bath. Using the loo is also a challenge, head height being provided via a small dormer aperture. A walk in shower with access from door end would be far better, or at the very least the addition of grab handles, but as it is, I'm afraid it made for very uncomfortable showering. The safety and comfort from a walk-in shower in this bathroom, in my opinion, outweighs the desire of some for a bath, with its obvious access problems.

Bathroom and shower not great for tall people but not a problem. We struggled a bit with the gas fire after the pilot light went out but perseverance won the day.

It was perfect for our needs. We visited in autumn so out door seating was not needed but I could see that in the summer it may be an issue. Other than that we had a great time. Its location just 10 mins by foot to Melrose was great. It was easy to converse with the host and we were able to make the most of our 4 night stay.
