We stayed here during our trip through Japan and honestly… this place is like discovering a secret level in a video game. Downstairs is not just a common area — it’s basically a restaurant / cooking class / reading club / cozy fireplace lounge / garden retreat all rolled into one. The funny part? It’s only open on reservation, which makes it feel like you’ve unlocked a hidden VIP space. Very mysterious. Very cool. Upstairs, the room is quiet, open, and peaceful. You don’t hear anything from downstairs at all. It’s the kind of silence you didn’t know you needed after walking 20,000 steps exploring Takayama all day. And location? Perfect. Right in the old part of town, so you’ll probably only be in the room to sleep anyway — Takayama pulls you outside constantly. The host is incredibly kind. She made us cake and tea, showed us around, and made us feel at home immediately. That kind of hospitality is rare — the kind you remember later and think, “That was special.” Perfect place for couples traveling through Japan who want something unique, warm, and a little bit magical. Would stay again. Also would come back just for the cake.

The toilet is conveniently upstairs, and the shower/bath are downstairs in a separate private space. It actually worked perfectly fine and added to the cozy guesthouse feeling.

Amazing host and traditional Japanese home! Amazing to get to stay in such a historic location! Shiori is such a kind host and made us apple pie. The location was AMAZING in historic takayama. Wouldn’t have stayed anywhere else.

The place was amazing with beautiful 100 year old Japanese house that was really clean, tidy that had warm fire place and really good atmosphere. This must be the best place we stayed in japan mostly because of Yuki the owner that was welcoming and delightful. He also made us a vegan shabu shabu that him and his wife made for us that was delicious and very recommended. Definitely one of our high lights of japan.

Beautiful, cosy traditional house in great location in old part of Takayama. Hosts were friendly and helpful in assisting us with restaurant and taxi bookings.

We found the advertisement misleading. It is advertised as a complete house with kitchen etc. but actually downstairs is open as a cafe from 10 am. So the kitchen isn't available during the day and the bathroom is also downstairs and awkward to use when the cafe is in operation. Overall when the cafe is in operation it felt uncomfortable and like we were intruding on their space. Sleeping area upstairs is comfortable but accessed by steep stairs and we had to unpack our cases to take them up, as we couldn't leave them in the cafe area. No sign of advertised washing machine. Expensive compared with other places we stayed.

La casa era un auténtico alojamiento japonés. La experiencia de la cena totalmente recomendable. El barrio una maravilla. Los colchones cómodos. Los baños estupendos.

Poca coordinación a la hora de dejar las maletas. La empleada nos dijo que no podíamos y, cuando ya nos habíamos marchado, la dueña nos respondió que sí.

It was amazing! Hannah was a very kind host (we got tea and banana cake when we arrived, so sweet!), the house is very beautiful and the location is perfect with nice dinner options in the area. Would 100% recommend staying here when going to Takayama. We were already talking about when we can come back :)
