"Cold, smelly, mouldy, dirty and looking very tired."

1.0

Location excellent, hot water, plenty of loo rolls

The cottage was really tired, mouldy, cold, smelly and dirty kitchen. The main (heating?) seems to be from 3 storage heaters which were not working. Two had a lit display panel, but no warmth. The third did not even have a functioning display. The front door opens into the sitting room/dining/kitchen are, but the letterbox does not close ,which adds to the chill inside. There was black mould in many places. There was white mould on the sofas and chairs. Much of the kitchen was dirty and mouldy, particularly the dishwasher. The microwave plate was dirty, the toaster full of crumbs. We had to wash all items before using. Many of the electrical appliances seemed elderly and were a tad worrying. The fire extinguisher was hidden behind a pile of cutting boards. There was no apparent PAT testing done on any of the appliances. The light swiches were placed really awkwardly in some rooms so that you had to go right into the room or even cross it before you could switch on the light. With different step levels this made negotaiting the space very tricky. The third bedroom didn't seem to have any heat source at all and was accessed via stairs so steep that only a mountain goat or small nimble child could negotioate them. Definitely not safe for anyone with larger feet as the winding treads were tiny. The damp and mouldy smell was very unpleasant. Plug in diffusers had been used to mask the smells, but this just made the aromas really pungent and stuck to our hair and clothes. We both ended up with coughs inside the cottage. We were fine outside. I don't really like to think too much about the upstairs shower room. If you feel brave, you really need to reverse into it crouching down really low to avoid bumping your head, then probably keep your eyes closed. The downstairs bathroom is really tired and the shower and tiles have seen better days.

"Great base for a walking weekend with our two dogs."

8.0

Comfortable traditional cottage close to harbour. Two good double bedrooms and bathroom on ground floor.

The upstairs (second) bathroom is too small to use and the staircase up to it and the single bedroom is dangerously steep and narrow.

"A pleasant stay for a short break"

7.0

Location was great, house was comfortable and homely. Beds comfortable, kitchen well equipped Booked because of ground floor bedroom Good value for money

Mostly clean, but corners need cleaning not just the centre of rooms. Upstairs bathroom could do with a deep clean.

"Lovely family setting"

We couldn’t actually stay in the bittern as double booked but the host accommodated us in a different home in the same place which was super!

Home was lovely but little overgrown down the alley to access the door.

"Comfortable accommodation in lovely surroundings, particularly suitable for a small family group."

9.0

We stayed at the Bittern for the Easter weekend and it was great that the property was in a very central location in Blakeney. Even on dates other than bank holidays I would expect the town to be busy and parking to be at a premium, but the comprehensive information emailed to us was very helpful and we found a free car park about 10 minutes' walk from the property. Previous reviews have stated that the property wasn't particularly clean, but we found to the contrary - in particular the bathrooms were spotless. I should also mentioned the excellent deli/bakery next door. Overall the property was quirky but we really enjoyed it. Blakeney and other locations nearby were, as expected, excellent.

The kitchen was well equipped but rather a squeeze, but for a two-night stay this wasn't a problem. Driving to the property was difficult due to the narrowness of the street and the number of vehicles using it but we only needed to do this when leaving.
