The Edgeworth

The Edgeworth is beautiful and grand. The location is peaceful and up above the main road and bustle of the town. The town is a 20 minute walk down hill for a reasonably fit person. The host who we met at his restaurant in town is charming and very responsive by WhatsApp/ phone. The rooms are grand and very comfortable, The bathroom/shower is clean and works well. The host was responsive and kind - he supplied electric blankets and hot water bottles for us on request. The first evening we went into town and had dinner at the hosts own restaurant. The second evening we had a takeaway delivered from that restaurant (the homestay only does breakfast)... the third evening we had dinner in the grand hotel just 5 minutes walk away - The Woodville Palace Hotel. If you get a takeaway then everything has to be re heated at the Edgeworth when it gets there - that is a bit hit and miss...

We were there in February - it was cold. The only facility for eating was in the room using a low coffee table. This is very uncomfortable, and also meant one of our party had to come from their room into ours to have meals together. This would happen if we wanted a takeaway meal delivered for dinner too. After a day the host arranged for some plastic garden furniture to be set up in the corridor. This area had no windows and a heater had to be brought from our room every day to make it comfortable. Obviously in warmer weather food would be served in the garden and that would be lovely I am sure. But that was not the case for us. We had 3 breakfasts and one takeaway dinner at the Edgworth - I think a little bit of thought needs to be applied to the eating arrangements - and plastic garden furniture is not appropriate in such a grand house.

A true gem. When we arrived on the train into Shimla, all we could see were shops and hotels crammed together with small roads packed with traffic. However, when we took a taxi from there to the Edgeworth, everything changed for the better. The Edgeworth is located in an exclusive area of Shimla which includes lots of government officials residences. The roas is also off limits to cars unless you have the proper cred. This lends itself to making the area around Edgeworth very peaceful. We had lovely views over the town and toward the mountains while having tea/coffee in the welcoming front yard and patio. The house itself is very well maintained. Loved the hundreds of potted flowers and plants. The owner lives on the top floor while the ground floor has three bedrooms for booking. All are huge! We stayed in two of the three rooms over several days and they were both very nice, one with a crystal chandelier and Indian style swing, and the other decorated with Indian paintings. Bathrooms are spotless and everything is just so nice. Great historic feel and quality. You can't beat the location. Quiet area but just a 15 minute easy walk to the Mall Road which is the pedestrian-only shopping and restaurant area. Plus lots of historic buildings there to see, along with views as the road runs along the top of the hill. THIS is the place you want to stay.

One small item is the house staff did not speak any English. It was difficult to convey our meal orders or any other questions we had. If we needed something, the communication was through WhatsApp with the owner.

Location is very good. Home cooked fresh food. Attendants are very good care takers. They make you feel at home.

Location is very good. But access to property is difficult. No accomodation or arrangement for accompanying driver. We had to request food for him and he had to sleep in the car in 0 degree cold. Flushing system needs to be repaired.

Beautifull heritage property in lovely gardens very well maintained. very clean and comfortable Mickey (not sure of his job title as he seemed to do everything!) was excellent - so helpful and friendly.

very little to fault but check-in could be quicker and smoother, after a long journey we just wanted to get into the room and relax.

Serene, quiet and gorgeous surroundings for anyone looking for a peaceful stay in the verdant hills of Shimla. Beautifully managed by gracious hosts. The food was absolutely sublime and the welcome kahwa was just chef’s kiss. Don’t forget to have your lunch/ breakfast in the sumptuous garden while enjoying the sunshine. Away from the bustle yet near enough from the Mall Road, it was a perfect getaway for our family.

Wonderful peaceful location but easily walkable to town. Spotlessly clean and well cared for property.

Not much natural light in the bedroom

We loved it! It was the best accommodation we had in our trip. It was beautifully kept, very clean, comfortable, lovely hosts. The location was also great for us - a little walk to the center but surrounded by nature. We also received an upgrade and a little surprise to celebrate our event. Thank you!
