The Munches Room at Buittle Castle

The breakfast is only severed from 7:15 to 8:15, except on weekends it is 30 minutes later. There are only 2 options, a fry-up or a boiled egg with a roll. I don't eat fry-ups so it is awfully expensive for some for what you would get. I also like to sleep in on holiday and wander down to a place and there isn't an option for those that I like a lie-in. You also have to go outside to go inside or have your breakfast by yourselves in your room which I don't like. You are never actually in the castle.

This accommodating nearly ruined our holiday. Once in the room, there were wasps everywhere, on the walls, the window sill, one was even swimming in the kettle. He took the kettle and dumped it outside and refilled it but you could see the wasps swarming outside the window into the roof space. When I said about them, he sprayed something but there was nothing else he could do. I have had wasp allergies in the past so I found this petrifying. Once he left, we had a look around the room. There was constant dog barking from the owners dogs and the door is an old barn door that you can see outside through. It was so cold in the room that I never even took off my 3 layers. There is gravel outside the door so every time someone walks by you can hear it. In the bathroom I have never seen so much black mould. It was disguising! It needs all silicon and grout redone. We were not happy with the state of the accommodation and said to Tobias. He said he would need to call the owner and he would be back in 5 minutes. I was outside in the cold wandering around the gardens and when I looked through a window to the kitchen. I saw Tobias just sitting there talking to the other guy. He wasn't phoning anyone. After ten minutes of waiting in the freezing cold, my husband knocked on the door and Tobias came out. My husband asked what he said and he couldn't come up with any other options. We said we're leaving. We hadn't even brought our bags into the property. Once we left, we notified booking.com immediately. They contacted Tobias, he said we left without him getting a chance to do anything. He said we should have gone out to dinner and he would give it extra cleaning before we got back. Unless he was going to regrout the bathroom, hire pest control, put a proper door on the room, and do some serious cleaning, that was not possible. They refuse to give us a refund and we have now contacted the credit card company. Booking.

The breakfast was excellent, beautifully served on fine bone china and exactly as we had ordered. The Great Hall where breakfast was served and the Munches Room gave us a true experience of the important family and Scottish history associated with the Castle.

The bathroom pipe work was a little noisy when sink and toilet was used, perhaps an airlock.

Everything! If you enjoy history you will be in awe of how tastefully decorated. Bed extremely comfy and wonderful shower in the bathroom. Hot tub added touch of bliss. Breakfast excellent and at exact time with the clocks! Tobias was a wonderful host and couldn't do enough for us and generous with his time and knowledge. We came away feeling like we were Lord and Lady. Definitely value for money, if anything underpriced.

Somewhat hard to find, hidden intersection but clear instructions which way to approach from.

It’s quirky and different. Wonderful host. Very helpful. Good value for money.
