The Munches Room at Buittle Castle

A splendorous place, well worth the find. And finding at first foxed us. I recommend sensibly approaching it from the A745 south-east, and turning right (eliding down past a row of wheelie bins and the No Through Road sign), or if from the north and west, going dead slow and pulling into the oncoming lane before turning left–about a 25-degree turn. Its shared farm track off the road, had had its Castle sign blown away. We were told that a new and sturdier sign should soon be in place: I suspect that the owner, Tobias, does not let grass grown under his feet. We flagged up a wasp or two in the bathroom, then found a nest under the roof: I suspect that that will have been sorted. It was internally splendorous, and lacks any real trace of tackiness. Our room itself was an old wonderland wow factor, even before we drank the excellent sherry which awaited my spouse & I. The wallpaper was costly and tasteful, and excellent décor throughout. The bed was comfy and overlaid with tartan. The outside door was in heavy old wooden style, with some small weathered cracks, an issue of antiquity, not of privacy nor ingress of the elements, IMO. Breakfast in the common room was exceptional, outstanding, awesome. Besides the top notch of our cooked Scottish breakfasts, we were in a spacious old room which oozed with courtly history. And the musac, correctly nonintrusive, was good classical morning music, with a bit of a bracing stir. After a good chat with Tobias, we (and other guests) welcomed his invitation into the castle’s living chapel, nicely tuned to Orthodoxism. Then we walked around the sunken garden, down to the river, and through the charming wood. Then alas back to our car and away. The car park itself is spacious and rural, a bit crusty.

I’d have the jug kettle stand on a small table and off the windowsill (the curtains can pull the jugless stand off the sill). But at most that’s a midge in the vat of perfume.

Quirky and unique

Wasps nest outside window so couldn’t open on one of the hottest days of the year. Parts of the bedroom and dining room room were dusty. Breakfast lacked fruit juice/cereal.

This is an amazing historical place to stay in a beautiful and peaceful location. The room was lovely, very high standard of decore and unusual. The host, Tobias, was genial, knowledgeable and attentive, special thanks to him and for his efforts.

Everything was wonderful!

So good! If you like peace and quiet, good food, a friendly, helpful, and welcoming host, then this is the place for you. Tobias was there upon our arrival and was attentive to our every need. Hot tub was a really great extra. Perry the peacock, and the bats flying around the place at dusk were amazing extras. My sister and I loved every minute of our stay...thank you! Top tip: private dining experience is well worth it....such good food in an amazing location

Period furnishings, comfortable, excellent host, like going back in time.

Tobias was an excellent host. He met us on arrival and to the time to ensure we were settled in. Nothing was too much trouble and Tobias provided us with an excellent evening meal cooked to perfection. The following morning we needed an early breakfast so we could register and participate in a cycling. Again this was no trouble and Tobias brought us a superb breakfast to our room. We enjoyed our stay so much we decided to stay an additional night.

Excellent breakfast served in unique location. Thoughtful and attentive host. Beautiful grounds, sunken garden with resident peacock.

The weather!

Wonderful setting. Freedom to roam the grounds. First class host in Tobias. Terrific room. Would love to go back sometime. What a view from the hot tub.

There was nothing I did not like.
