Lovely looking pub in an extremely popular location, with huge potential

Where to start! We read poor reviews but saw owners were new and doing improvements, so gave them the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake. Owners said been there 10 weeks so had plenty of time to do a lot more to improve. Nice looking room, but damp issues. Window rotten from outside, so screwed shut with blocks of wood on inside! Venitian blind chewed and adjuster rod missing, curtains dirty, some sort of insect casing on one. Built in wardrobe had mould and cobwebs random assortment of cheap/free hangers. Bag hanging against wall with hairdryer in felt wet to touch. A spare pillow on shelf with no cover felt damp too. Bedding on the standard double bed was thin and poor quality, pillows had no protectors or ones that did were old and stained. “Carex” soap on the shower room basin and used bottle of radox in shower. This in village dubbed Chelsea on sea, where other hotels and restaurants are very very very upmarket. Nice touch to have fresh milk jug in mini fridge, but fridge wasn’t turned on. Found an old contact lens on the floor. so not been cleaned. Big white towels, but one had a brown smear on it so didn’t use. Asked owner to put on outside light to our room as we had to go out and would be back late (hadn’t been on previous night, and there was a trip hazard coming from car park). Got back at 3am light not on, but outside lights to other accommodation and pub kitchen were on. No restaurant despite it saying there was on booking.com (kitchen was being refurbished and opening day we left). 4 teabags provided (2 English breakfast, 1 camomile, 1 earl grey) for 2 nights for 2 people. Could go on but ….all in all VERY expensive for POOR room with no breakfast. On holiday, so didn’t want to spoil things any more by bringing all this to owner while there, (it’s not like they could do building work and refurbish room to remedy while we were there!) , would have cancelled and complained to booking.

Location

I know that the new people are only just refurbishing! The pub looked lovely but the rooms were not so good, they need a good lick of paint and bathrooms need sorting out too, if the rooms can be made really classy then I’m sure this place will be really successful and have returning customers because of its great location, but sadly we won’t be returning.

New ownership at The Nelson, great hosts who are turning this place round, excellent communication. Super location and a good price for Burnham Market.

Some toiletries (shower gels etc) in the bathroom would have been good.

The property is being slowly refurbed. Our room was awkward small and pokey. En-suite was tiny with very noisy fan .
