This ryokan was located on the cutest street in Matsumoto. While pricey, the ensuite restroom was worth the extra price. It was a little odd to have to set up our own beds, after paying for four people, but the futons and fully standing beds were extremely comfortable, and the room was a good size (though it was tight for four) once we moved the table. The bathroom was simply incredible, the shower was powerful and hot, and the toilet and sink was perfect. The location of the ryokan couldn't have been better. We walked to all the major sites, including the castle, and we were able to find many locations for food and shopping. Though we didn't get to enjoy breakfast as we had to leave early the next day, the breakfast options were fantastic and looked delicious. The common spaces and small optional drinks were appreciated and plentiful. Beyond this, the customer service was attentive, friendly, and warm. The weather was variable during our visit, and the hosts gladly allowed us to store our luggage early and were very response.

We had four people in a room, so there was scarce space for the bedrolls on the floor with the table out. It was fine, but it was a little weird to setup our own beds after paying for four individuals.

"Perfect experience, legitimate 10/10"

10.0

It was very charming and clean. Everyone who worked there was so nice and helpful, they let us drop our bags before check in and hauled them up to the top floor by the time we returned. The beds in room 5 were by far the most comfortable that I’ve ever slept in while traveling (ever, in every country I’ve been to) The separate (but private) Bathroom was incredibly nice, the shower was amazing. Breakfast is also a must at Nunoya.

The only thing I didn’t like was that we left so soon, next time, I’ll stay at least a few more nights

"A must stay in Matsumoto"

10.0

We really loved our stay here, it was so comfortable and cosy. The staff were helpful and they have a great selection of tours available to help you get to know the town. Our room was warm and it was cool to get to live in the traditional Japanese way. Would 100% stay here again!

"Excellent experience by English tpyrists travelling around Japan."

10.0

We traveled from the UK to Japan, and stayed at Nunoya Ryokan for a couple of days in March 2026. We don't speak any Japanese. Matsumoto was a convenient place to stop for a break between Kyoto and Tokyo. The backdrop of the mountains is very beautiful. It's a small brewery town with lots of old characterful properties. Nunoya Ryokan was exceptional. We had a large bedroom and private bathroom. The beds were comfortable, and the shower was powerful. It's an old traditional building, with modern comfortable amenities. We paid a small fee to add breakfast and coffee each morning at the ryokan, which was excellent quality fresh locally produced food. Nunoya Ryokan is located on the famous Nakamachi Street, full of boutique shops, a short walk from the rail station. The owner Toru, and Ugie took us for a guided tour of the town, delivered in English. They also took us to a nearby sake brewery, where we purchased some locally brewed sake to take back to the UK. They also told us about places to eat and drink, where the local people eat. We enjoyed some excellent meals out, all very reasonably priced, and were made to feel welcome by the local patrons. We also enjoyed some craft ales and sake at local bars near the ryokan. We highly recomend this as a place to stay for tourists. It's nice to spend some time in a smaller quieter town, to break up time spent in the bigger cities.

We loved everything!
