"Vanhaa charmia"

8.0

Rakennus on ihastuttavan vanhanaikainen. Hotelli tuntui asuttavan asunnottomia. Kaiken kaikkiaan kuitenkin positiivinen kokemus.

"Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!"

10.0

Cool old hotel! Still uses keys! Seemed very safe, desk manned all the time. Need to get buzzed in after 2AM. Great location. A/C was out (given an option to cancel, but glad I didn't) had two windows that opened, had a cross breeze and a ceiling fan, and was very comfortable. Would stay there again if/when I return, which I hope to, as Dubuque is a very interesting town.

The hotel was absolutely horrible - from the pictures, it looked super cool.....we literally checked in, spent 20 minutes in the room, then checked out. The room was hot, unairconditioned, no window screens.

I wanted so badly to give this property a good review but after our stay I can't. As we were checking in, we met the new owner who assumed management the day before our stay. He has big plans for this property with many improvements coming. The rooms were larger than most with room for a table and nice size refrig/frz. Bedding was clean and pleasing to the eye. The price was lower than any other hotels in the area but we sadly got what we payed for. The check-in process was slow. The rooms were larger that most. The bar had reasonable prices and a great karyoke sound system. For being the first online reservation under the new management, they gave us a free drink. The staff and service was very good and they receive great ratings. The main negative we had was no controls for the air conditioning in the room. It was warm and we tried to sleep with the windows open but every train and accelerating vehicle that went by made it difficult to sleep. Just outside our windows was an entrance ramp to the highway and a railroad across the highway. Here's a list of items that are found in most hotel rooms but were missing from this one: no cups, no shampoo, no trash cans, noisy ceiling fan and TV had bad signal and kept freezing up. Bathroom was very small - It was necessary to step into the shower to close and open the bathroom door. The building is very old/nostalgic and has a lot of potential but the new owner has some work to do before a better rating can be offered.

This building was prob made in the 40s and no updates seem to have been made fo make it a better place. Everything is old, the rooms are super small, the bathroom sink was in the small living room. The bathroom was insanly small and combined with shower make it smaller. No shampoo. Funny thing bout the tv...its a roku tv which requires internet to work...but guess what, they dont have wifi!!! Avoid this place at all cost.

"Bed bugs infested"

2.0

People at front desk get real rude if you make a complain about anything wrong with you room. I wouldn’t recommend staying here at all, the price is not bad if rent it per month, but you will be traveling home with an infestation of bed bugs. Spend some more money for some other place to stay and be safe and comfortable.

"Couldn't sleep; very uncomfortable bed; smokey"

4.0

We've stayed here for the last 10 years whenever we visit Dubuque. We love the eclectic and retro vibe of the hotel and the staff is always very nice to us. Location is great. Although not top-notch mattresses by any means, they've always at least been comfortable enough to sleep on. After this weekend, it's evident the mattress we slept on 10 years ago is still the same mattress being used in room 617. It was hard as a rock and there were only 2 completely flat pillows. We spent a very uncomfortable night tossing and turning. Also, there are still some rooms that allow smoking and this time the smoke smell was really overwhelming. Most rooms have a "no smoking" sign on them, but the room next to ours did not so it's likely this is where much of the smoke smell was coming from. The room was clean, as always. We have really enjoyed staying here in the past, unfortunately I think our backs and noses are too old take it anymore.

"Last resort "

4.0

We didn’t have hotel, and stopped here as last resort. The lady at front desk was friendly and we got the last 3 rooms. The rooms are decorated like apartments. During our stay we found out that a lot of their customers are long-time tenants. Our group had some interesting conversations with people but we felt weird staying there. I swear I heard someone came into my room in middle of night but I didn’t see anybody and nothing was gone.

"It was a great old time experience with a good night sleep at "The New Canfield Hotel""

8.0

My wife and I had just traveled ten hours on a Friday and had come to a stop in Dubuque, IA. We had not reserved a room anywhere as we didn't know how far we would travel. But, don’t you like it when hotels try to gouge you as a you call for a room for the same night? One hotel desk said, “Well I have limited availability starting at 200 dollars.” Click...we called our next number and they said, "Eighty dollars for a single bed." Perfect! The room was clean and had a home like atmosphere. A room with character. I’m not one to post about a hotel room experience but I couldn’t let this old time pillar of the city of Dubuque pass by. Too many newer hotels are so modern or nondescript. The building’s structure and layout provided a quiet night ideal for sleeping. It was a perfect stay at this old time hotel which we needed. The best part was the person at the front desk who handled our phone call, our initial arrival and she was there when we checked out. Carrol was a pleasure to meet and she even recommended her neighbor’s business for our morning breakfast. I told her at checkout it was a perfect stay. I’ve missed the old time locks and keys since the cards have taken over. You’ll discover other things too. From shower heads piercing your pores, ceiling fan, thicker blinds. I almost took anothe shower to enjoy the old time shower head spray and pressure.

"Horrible customer service from the front desk, and this place is infested with bed bugs.. I've stayed here for 2 months"

2.0

Horrible customer service skills at the front desk. I've stayed here for two months here for business in Dubuque and after my second month my comforter was changed through room service. I walk into the lobby from work one day, lay down to relax for about an hour and immediately start to get eaten buy bed bugs from this old filthy comforter they had put on my bed that day.. I go to the front desk to notify them and the owner happened to be sitting in the lobby immediately the owner blames me! So the next day after work I walk into the lobby and there's a handwritten note stating I had to be out whether I have money or not to pay for the next month's rent because his establishment gave me a infestation of bed bug bites..! I'm completely disgusted shame on you can field hotel and your owner! Absolutely filthy!
