It's a well restored actual palace located just outside the historical old city center, and one appreciates it during breakfast - it's a real palace ballroom :-). Rooms mostly face the big inner courtyard, and it is very quiet during the night. You can get to almost any place of interest by simply walking, including the pedestrian part of Rua de Cedofeita that starts within 200m from the hotel. There is a supermarket nearby where you can get water. The hotel has a gym, but it's tiny.

Rooms are designed for people who do not use a computer at all. Instead of a [tiny] work desk ours had a weird and rather useless corner couch, and a tiny round table. I had to keep my laptop on my lap while sitting on this couch, which is not the most comfortable position. The breakfast was fine, but definitely not up to the standards of a 5-star hotel. We had much better breakfast at a 3-star hotel in Lisbon :-(. The coffee was terrible, and you needed to ask the staff if you wanted anything except their horrible drip coffee. (At most hotels they have coffee machines where one can select the desired drink, and coffee is better almost everywhere).

Comfortable, well appointed large room overlooking the garden. Thiis was a perfect calm oasis near the city centre. Nice touch to provide complimentary drinks at the bar on first night. Breakfast quality and choice was excellent. Evening meals were good but not 5 star. More vegetables and salads should be available.

Staff were thinly stretched at times in the dining room. Water in the bedroom is not automatically refreshed each day. We had to keep asking for this, especially as we were in the middle of a heat wave. One of the dining room staff was very rude to us when we arrived early before 7 to grab some beeakfast before a trip that had already been put out She refused us entry even though the waitor and receptionist from the previous evening said this had been arranged for us. Communications between staff it seems were ineffective, but this does not excuse the rudeness. In the end we managed to get a breakfast box after reception staff intervened. Frankly we had better service from a 4* star hotel in Lisbon. Dining room staff do not appear to have been well trained in the basics of hospitality. It was also disconcerting to see staff set up neigjbouring tables for breakfast while still eating dinner at 9.00pm! This was not 5* service, however the location and facilities helped to compensate a little.
