The facilities were immaculate. The ability to access the river and bathe was incredible. Ability to hire the bicycles was really helpful.

Our host and the facilities were impeccable. We arrived by train to Yuyaonsen from Toyohashi. (Just a note on this, since I was dumb, you need bills lower than 5000¥ for the train as it does not work with Suica or Pasmo from what I could gather.) Hoo! Hoo! is located mere steps away from the train stop and is very easy to get to. Kato-san not only checked on questions we had but went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and prepared for the next stop on our Japan travels, he even helped us courier service our bags so that we could avoid having to lug them around to our next hotel. Truly next level service. Battery assisted bikes were available for rental but we decided to walk most of the town and area. Plenty to walk around and see for 2 days. We truly enjoyed the breakfast as well as the recommendations for local restaurants.

Overall, a really, really lovely evening. The upstairs space with views over the water is just beautiful, and the breakfast is a great touch — you can enjoy it at any time in the morning, which makes everything feel very relaxed. One thing to keep in mind is that your sleep can depend on how considerate other guests are when it comes to noise. That said, we had absolutely no issues at all. The shared bathrooms and toilets are located just opposite the room, and everyone was very quiet and respectful, so it didn’t impact our stay in any way. The location is also a real highlight. There’s an incredible temple not far away in the mountains, with a climb of around a thousand steps — well worth it. Pair that with a lovely lunch at one of the ryokan at the base of the temple, and a peaceful bike ride around the area using the bikes provided, and you’ve got the perfect experience. The only small downside is that food options nearby are a bit limited. There’s a sushi spot around the corner which is nice, but not the best you’ll ever have. Honestly, I’d recommend leaning into the experience — stop by a supermarket on your way in, pick up some really good pre-made food, and enjoy it in the lounge like a relaxed little picnic. Otherwise, you’ll need to motivate yourself to head back out after a couple of hot baths… which is the last thing you’ll feel like doing. It’s the kind of place where you can truly slow down and enjoy a calm, quiet evening.
