Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

Nice property, good facilities, current spa is tired in places but new one is under construction by Summer 2026. Rooms of a good standard especially the bathrooms.

The staff both in quantity and quality are not 5*. Too much inexperience of what quality service looks like. The card operated door locks on both my rooms did not work for 1 of my 2 day stay so my rooms were permanently open which was a major failure of security and privacy. The hotel is not “dog friendly” it is “dog tolerant”. Despite me calling ahead and confirming 3 times during my stay the Cloisters mezzanine restaurant was not available and I was required to eat in the bar seated at the bottom of a flight of stairs. The phone answering when calling the hotel or the email messaging is totally haphazard and makes planning anything in advance very difficult. The staff don’t appear to communicate effectively as problems / issues are not resolved quickly as you have to continually re-explain yourself.

Breakfast and food in general were fantastic, as was the general location and ambiance.

While overall the facilities worked well, there were several small issues that one does not expect to happen in a property like this: no hot water in the shower on arrival, the jacuzzi in the spa was not working, noisy construction work from 8am onwards, and the lady welcoming us at reception was not very friendly (while other staff were amazing).

Exceptionally high standards… attention to detail in every area of our stay. The staff were so professional and friendly yet discreet at the same time. Our room was luxurious and extremely comfortable. Breakfast was a real treat. Beautifully maintained grounds and gardens. Our stay at Matfen was wonderful!

Peaceful and luxurious. The perfect location to get away from it all and enjoy some rest and relaxation. Beautifully appointed throughout. Staff were friendly and professional and the food and drink offerings were superb.
