"Hidden green paradise"

10.0

The best accomodation in Bukit Lawang! Very cozy, calm hotel made with greate taste. It is located in the river, in front of it yiu can see splendid views on jungles! And of course his staff is the best! Mr Arif does his best, he is involved in his job, does everything possible to his guests, thanks him a lot! Moreover i had beautiful one-day trekking with him and we were so lucky! We saw 7-9 orangutans, one gibbon, monkeys tomas, kyffia (snake). Kupu-kupu worth staying in it and pass several days in a little green paradise

"Amazing"

Wonderful guesthouse. Risky and Arif are amazing, the food is great and the location beautiful. We arranged a motorbike transport from the bus station and then it’s a 10 minute walk along the water. We would love to come back one day!

"The Hidden Gem of Bukit Lawang"

10.0

Kupu Kupu is a special place on an even more special location. Just a 5 to 10 min walk away from the village, this hidden gem truely lays in the jungle of bukit lawang. its a nice and quiet place, where you can spot plenty of animals just from your own balcony. The amazing staff will do everything to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Risky, Arif, Marry and Kiki are there for you 24/7. they will make you some amazing food and help you organize any activity you would like. even if you have more custom request they will do everything to make it happen.

I wish I stayed longer

"One of the best experiences we had in Indonesia!"

10.0

It is the perfect starting point for a jungle trekking. When we arrived, the host Arif explained us the possible trekkings after offering us a delicious welcome drink. We did a 2 day trekking and spent one night in the jungle. Arif provided 2 amazing guides, Putra and Juli, who guided us through the jungle and pointed out the orangutans, a wide variety of monkeys and a few hornbills! They also motivated our kids to keep going and they made them jungle crowns out of leafs. The rafting back was really fun. The food during the trekking was amazing. When we got back from the trip we had a long talk with the chef cook, Risky, who talked about the local life and way of doing things. I think he was probably the most friendly person we have met so far in Indonesia, and since everybody there is nice, that is saying a lot. And his food was awesome too! We had a fantastic experience here and i would definitely recommend this place! We are going to miss it for sure! Greetings from jungle queen Suzan and jungle king Jerom!

You need to walk around 30 minutes from the village to the guest house. It’s not a difficult walk, but if it’s hot, you will get sweaty. If needed, they can provide you a porter to help you with your most heavy bags.

"Beautiful location, amazing staff, and great food!"

10.0

There are so many good things about this place but the best is probably the staff, all so warm and friendly, they are all lovely, Risky especially, who is the cook but does so much more to help his guests. One afternoon he noticed I was free and offered to take me to the market which was such a nice experience as I got to see some nice scenery on the way.  The gardens are beautifully kept, with lots of flowers and huge butterflies.  The rooms are comfortable with views overlooking the river and forest on the other side, where you can often see macaques and silver langurs.  It's about 10 minutes walk from the end of the village where the scooters drop you off, but it's a nice walk along a forested path by the river.  The food is excellent, with lots of vegetarian and vegan options.  I went on a 3 day jungle trek.  Wanda and Juli were my guide and assistant guide, and both were excellent.  Wanda has many years experience and is an expert on mammals, insects and flora of the forest.  Juli was very helpful in helping to search for animals and assisted me to get better views for photographing the birds and animals.

The river is very loud so if you're a light sleeper bring some earplugs!

"How I long to return and hopefully will do soon."

10.0

Occasionally on my many travels over the years I have come across a place where I could quite easily stay put and while away the days, somewhere quiet literally at peace with itself and the world and I'm happy to say Kupu Kupu is one of those places. But is not just the place its the people that run it that make it so, so, special. Arif, Risky, my guide Putra, and Su you all touched my heart. Arif for your humanity and warmth, Risky for your infectious laugh positivity and the wonderful garden you tend that helps make Kupu Kupu so special, Putra my wonderful guide who took such good care of me on our jungle trek after I sprained my ankle. Such a special person and always ready with a smile and his( Ooops) not so wonderful signing (sorry Putra :) Huge congratulations on the birth of your son :) Last but not least Sue, I loved our chats in the evening, you have created such a wonderful place I hope you find the means and the will to keep it going. The communal meals in the evenings are also a great opportunity to connect and share stories with other travellers too. Yes, it’s located outside the village of Bukit Lawang meaning a 20–30-minute walk along what can be at times a tricky path meaning it won't suit all, particularly those with mobility issues. For me though it’s very charm was that it outside the town and set by the river in jungle. The sound of the river at night a soothing backdrop to fall asleep to. I could go on and on, but I will wrap up with my usual last question, would I go back to which I answer, yes within a heartbeat.

There is nothing I did not like about Kupu Kupu or Bukit Lawang, it was just the most prefect place. However, most people seem to travel to this part of Sumatra and the world with one isolated goal, to see orangutan, which is great as it helps support the local community and preserve and protect the jungle and its inhabitants, but there is so much more to Bukit Lawang. So please, don't hurry, spend a bit of time, get to know the local community whilst enjoying the wildlife and you will come away so much the richer for it. I encountered a community that was friendly, open, interested and curious, and there aren't many places left in the world you can still say that about.
