Kupu Kupu Garden Guest House & Cafe

The guesthouse is located somewhat outside of the village. Which at first seemed a bit of a hassle going to the village, but in turn you get amazing views of the jungle and an amazing staff and amenities. The guesthouse has a panoramic view of the jungle, and because of the distance to the village we managed to see all kinds of wildlife. The guesthouse has a communal dining concept, where they make sure there is something for everyone (also providing vegan or vegetarian options). The food was amazing and the atmosphere invites social contact with others. We got to know a lot of people. The staff itself are really friendly and helpful. The guesthouse arranges tours and activities. We booked a two day jungle track. In contrary to other tour agencies, with Kupu Kupu you get private tours, which was exactly what we wanted. This way we were able to set our own pace. The guys from the tour - Putra and Roy - were amazing. We had lots of laughs and sang our way through the track. Aside from all the fun, we also managed to see a wide arrange of wildlife, including many Orangutans. The experience we had here was truly exceptional and we would 100% recommend anyone going here.

Everything was really good

Very secluded location next to the river. Amazing food, with a set meal time and shared tables enabled us to meet other guests and use the games provided for a fun evening. Very reasonable in price. The hotel had it's own tour guides which made booking treks into the jungle very easy. We were surprised how busy the jungle was with other tours however.

We arrived from Medan airport in the afternoon and it rained extremely heavily when we arrived in Bukit lawang. We waited with the staff by the road under a shelter until the rain eased, but then we had to walk to the hotel in the dark. It was a half hour walk in the pitch black along what used to be a path but now was a stream due to the rain. It was an unfortunate start. So while the location is great for seclusion from the village, it might be too far if you don't want to walk half an hour from the main road.

Location was simply breathtaking. Staff were fabulous. We completed a days trek which was a fabulous experience. Wanda, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and we learnt a lot. Wish we could have stayed longer.

The location about 30 minutes walk from the centre is only for the fit and healthy. But you are rewarded with a tropical rainforest oasis. They arranged a great guide Wanda, a great trek, and people to carry the luggage.

The food was delicious, location fantastic and staff very friendly. We loved our stay and would love to return in the future. We also booked the Jungle Trek with them and the guides, Adi and his son, Apro, were amazing, took great care of us, were very ethical in their approach to the animals and were patient with our speed.

This is an incredibly unique experience in Bukit Lawang. It is more than a place to stay, and the people care incredibly about your experience. The journey to Kupu Kupu is definitely an adventure, especially as we arrived at night, but this just adds to the magic of the stay. We did the jungle trek, which was all organised through Kupu Kupu, and it was incredible. We saw so much nature, including orangutans, and the guides are completely expert. We actually saw Orangutans from Kupu because it is further down the river. Definitely book your tour through Kupu Kupu - they will organise all travel arrangements, tours and walk you to Kupu Kupu!

It is a walk from the town through a jungle track, so you’ll want to eat dinner at Kupu, but the food was so incredible it is definitely worth it. We wish we had stayed for more nights!

We loved staying at Kupu Kupu. It’s a short walk from the main stretch of town, but feels completely secluded and like you’re living in the middle of the jungle. We even saw orangutans one morning while having breakfast! Big shout out to the friendly and helpful hosts Arif and Risky who made our stay comfortable and introduced us to many of Sumatra’s culinary delights. Risky cooked us some of the best meals we had during our travels and his potato egg and pumpkin cassava curries were to die for! We’d definitely stay here again if we come back to Bukit Lawang!

Cold water shower took some getting used to and we missed having AC in the rooms in the humid climate (we knew these were not available when we booked though so it’s not the hotel’s fault).

Arif is a very friendly host. Great room, directly in nature. Keep in mind that the homestay is quite far away, especially when you have heavy luggage. But they offer a porter service.

The place is beyond amazing. Couldn't of been more tranquil. The views of the forest and the river are spectacular, with animals and birds everywhere. The staff at the property couldn't do enough to help you either, and they are friendly, charming and fun. The food was varied, personalised and delicious. Thank you for everything. Also, the jungle tours with Wanda and Julie are phenomenal, they're unbelievable at their jobs and know the rainforest like the back of their hands. Thank you for everything Arif, Risky and everyone else for making our stay perfect!

Situated a 15 min walk away from the main town (which is fine if you're looking to relax).
