Canopy Lodge - Boutique Lodge at Hakuba Cortina

The wooden construction and furniture gives the Canopy Lodge a homey aesthetic which is amplified by the warmth radiating from the central wood furnace. Situated in heavy snow and tall mountains; the warm and cozy lodge offers a winter experience at its finest. It is a far more authentic, and down to earth experience than can be provided by a large scale resort. Breakfast and dinner are offered at the lodge and I would highly recommend eating both as the food is fresh, and cooked professionally by a highly creative and inspired team of chefs. Every plate is high end and delicious, and consists of a healthy assortment of each food group, fueling you through the hours on the mountain. During the evening, the bar's open with great drink options, for those who like a pint of cold beer, wine, or a cocktail after a day on the slopes. Final point to highlight is that the transport offered both to the lodge, from Hakuba, and back; and the transport to the multitude of ski hills each day makes the experience easy and nearly thought free for the lodge guests. Without having to worry about the logistics of the day, you can deeply relax and and fully sink into your holiday. The comfort of the bed, covers, pillows, shower system and bathroom all exceeded expectations.

The TV in the bedroom is a nice touch, but it could benefit from a DVD player and some old movies to choose from to watch in bed.

I'm very glad we opted to have dinner each night of our stay at Canopy Cortina -- the food was a highlight of our ski trip! Lodge is cosy, well located near the slopes, and staffed by friendly folks who are happy to help.

A Hidden Gem in Hakuba Cortina Our last-minute February booking at Canopy Lodge turned out to be the highlight of our Japan ski vacation. This intimate six-room lodge strikes a perfect balance between luxury and warmth, leaving us wishing we'd booked more than two nights. The location is unbeatable - we could ski directly to and from Cortina base with just a few side steps. Our spacious room easily fit three beds, with a modern bathroom and comfortable seating area. The lodge's well-thought-out amenities include a gear drying room and a cozy fireplace area where guests naturally gather after skiing. The dining experience alone is worth the stay. Mike's innovative multi-course dinner rivals top restaurants worldwide, featuring creative dishes that celebrate local ingredients and Japanese traditions. While I won't spoil the surprises, expect a culinary journey that will become a highlight of your trip. What truly sets Canopy Lodge apart is its exceptional staff and their genuine camaraderie. Their enthusiasm for both hospitality and skiing is infectious - we even shared some runs with them on the mountain. With only six rooms, we found ourselves engaging in wonderful conversations with both staff and fellow guests, creating the kind of meaningful connections that make travel special. While not a budget option, I feel Canopy has incredible value. The combination of perfect location, outstanding cuisine, and genuine hospitality makes Canopy Lodge worth every yen. Our only regret? Not booking a longer stay.

A unique experience, that being an all inclusive accommodation and culinary stay. Rooms are very comfortable, western style and clean. Food is first class for breakfast (free) and dinner degustation menu. Location to Hakuba Cortina resort is very good. Staff were incredibly accomodating and friendly and created a homely feel. We would definitely go back.

Recommend strongly that you have a car, however access can be difficult if the road to Cortina is icy (4wd ideally). Loved the food, but there are no options if you don’t want to do the degustation menu, hence the car is needed to drive elsewhere. No lunch options if you wanted to head back to the lodge during the day. From 4pm-10pm you have to buy drinks from bar, so it can get expensive.
